hi! idk if there’s a side of twitter specifically for selective mutism but i decided to make this account because i do suffer from sm and i wanted an account just for this.
i’ve had many therapists that don’t understand selective mutism, forcing me to talk when i can’t. telling me “we can’t get anything done if you don’t talk” but there are many ways to communicate if you can’t talk. for example: writing in a notebook, using sign language, etc.
i really really need a job but i don’t think i’d be able to because my sm has been at its peak lately and i don’t think i could handle it but i really need money.
if you’re the parent of a child with selective mutism, please be patient with them. they’ll talk when they are ready to. don’t show that you’re upset. don’t get mad at them. don’t yell at them. don’t force them. just treat them like you would anyone else. with care.
selective mutism isn’t something to make fun of or be mad at someone over. we aren’t any less of a person just because we can’t talk in certain situations.
do not say “oh so you can talk” when we finally get comfortable enough to talk to you. do not acknowledge our speaking. just respond to us as you would any other person.
people with selective mutism are not rude. we don’t ignore you. we listen to every word and we want to respond but we just can’t. i wish more people understood that.
