First day of school Year 11 😱 I was told that lemon print is all the rage this year and also asked if Fruit will be a theme 🤷🏻♀️ Happy first day back and thank goodness for a short work week! #teachersofinstagram… https://t.co/8slvnkQOK5
@druinok I use this visual as a reminder after the initial lesson https://t.co/DNUHFotr1H because my students have a hard time with the difference between an upper case script letter and lower case script letter.
“Representing mathematical concepts and processes in different manipulative contexts is a way to give symbols meaning, a way to eliminate memorization and to bring interpretation and understanding back to the process of doing mathematics for learners.” - Barbara Kinach 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
If Ss with very low ability in heterogenous classes perceive themselves as ineffective or helpless learners, then they take little personal responsibility for individual learning and view learning outcomes as dependent on their lack of ability rather than their lack of effort.
Friendly reminder as we start #tptbacktoschoolsale, putting up posters about #growthmindset is NOT an intervention strategy.Unless you are teaching your students the brain science behind how challenges actually change the brain, youre using it inappropriately. #TheMoreYouKnow
“Negative attitudes and diminished sense of personal and collective efficacy may lead teachers to withdraw effort and hold skeptical beliefs about change” (Middleton & Perks) — say it louder for the Administration in the back! #buildusup#dontbringusdown
Holding on to this for the upcoming school year. Our Sunshine committee is already hard at work putting together “Welcome Back” packages. #iteachhighschool#sunshineclub
This is sickening. I remember arguing with my roomie frosh year bc she thought she deserved more aid than me bc she had higher grades...her father was a lawyer and mother was a teacher and both graduated from the college we attended. Meanwhile I was #firstgeneration

This school year I stepped a little out of my comfort zone and taught two sections of honors Alg 2 — my students had to create a unit circle and I was blown away by their creativity #highschoolmath#trigonometry#unitcircleproject
“Motivation is the deeper energy that exists in each learner and has a direction or goal, even if that goal is not aligned with the current classroom goal or is not apparent to the teacher” (Middleton & Perks, 17). #classroom#motivation
Yes to this entire thread 👏🏻 Using encouraging language with students can be helpful but pushing growth mindset as an intervention is INAPPROPRIATE! But let’s light some more money on fire to see if it’ll eventually work #onlyineducation#readtheresearch
Just finished reading the big UK mindset training study. It's extremely well designed:
✅Randomized control study
✅Sample size >4000
✅High treatment fidelity
✅High statistical power
✅Controlled for cluster sampling

@megan_banashak If we go over it in class then not a chance — if I’m just spot checking a couple of math problems or collecting it as a whole then it can be handed in late for 1/2 credit...HW is usually only worth 5-15pts.
We waste so much time on unnecessary paperwork — give me that time back to plan engaging lessons, collaborate with other teachers, or discuss student concerns. #letteachersTEACH
Admin, for the new year, try to remove something from your Teachers already supersized Platter. Find something no longer needed or working. Like detailed lesson plans, covering other T's during planning, lunch duty, etc. This shows you value them & they will appreciate you for it!
"When I like the teacher, I want to do their work. And I'll be like, 'I can learn this.'" Research shows that students who feel safe and supported by adults at school are better able to learn. #HowLearningHappens
