The timing of the arrest of Ms @SarahBireete and the manner of its execution following her sharp, sustained criticisms of the Kampala regime, her relentless pursuit of the rule of law, only confirms one thing - the democratic space in Uganda is throttled, strangled, and replaced with an authoritarian tendency dressing as a ‘democracy.’

If Sarah has committed any offence, accord her the dignity of a summons, interrogation, and processing for accountability.

For years, the fishermen of Kalangala District have endured endless harassment, intimidation, and economic suffocation under the so called enforcement operations of the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU). Their boats, engines, and nets were confiscated in the name of “protecting the lake,” while families starved and livelihoods were destroyed.

Now suddenly, just as the @NRMOnline regime begins its early mobilization for 2026, the same unit led by Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa has ordered the return of all the impounded boats, engines, and nets to their owners. She made this announcement during a meeting organized by NRM leaders at Kakyungwa Landing Site in Bufumira Subcounty, where local fishermen and community leaders were gathered.

This gesture, conveniently wrapped in political speeches praising @KagutaMuseveni , was clearly not about justice or compassion. It was about politics. After years of state repression on the lake, the regime now wants the votes of the same people it oppressed.

Lt. Col. Tukahirwa’s order to return confiscated property and remove the roadblock at Mazigo which had caused transport delays and economic frustration was met with cheers. But for those who have lived through the FPU’s brutality, the timing speaks volumes. Why now? Why only when the ruling party is touring the region, calling for “unity” and “patience”?

Brig. Gen. Augustine Kyazze, head of civic education in Greater Masaka, used the same platform to urge the people of Ssese Islands to remain patient and keep supporting the government, warning them to “avoid mistakes at the ballot box.” That statement alone reveals the real motive: not reform, but votes.

For years, the government has ignored the cries of fishermen. Families have been torn apart by debt after losing their only sources of income. Some have been beaten, others arrested without trial. Now, with elections approaching, the regime pretends to care presenting itself as the savior of a crisis it created.

This is not liberation. It’s political damage control.
The people of Kalangala deserve justice, not staged forgiveness.
