Yesterday, a violent long-tracked waterspout prompted MWS Bikini Bottom’s first ever Waterspout Emergency. Criteria for a Waterspout Emergency are as follows, VROT (rotational intensity) must be greater than 60 kts. Additionally, there must be ground confirmation of a waterspout.

Yesterday, we had both of those—a photo report of the waterspout and VROT at 60 kts. Will this be the only Waterspout Emergency of the year? Time will only tell, but we are always on it incase an emergency is ever needed.

Here are our findings from July 28th, 2026's long-tracked waterspout sequence. Surveyors found preliminary EF-5 damage in the Edenton to Southern Shores waterspout. This is preliminary.

Preliminary findings suggest high end EF-4 waterspout damage in portions of the Albemarie Sound in North Carolina. Investigating for potential EF-5 damage.

5PM EST Convective Outlook: Elevated (3/5) for coastal South Carolina, primarily damaging winds up to 60 kts and a few waterspouts likely. Isolated hail cannot be ruled out in stronger storms.
