I have compiled a list of book recommendations for those interested in classical African literature and Africanist perspectives. I will keep adding to the list.
I've treated the last week as a "think week", which is something Bill Gates practiced while running Microsoft as CEO.
From what I've read, he'd stay in a cabin and completely disconnect from work, the internet, and family. He'd just read, think, and write for 7 days.
I didn't take it that far – I spent most of the last week with family for the holidays.
But I did start reading a couple of books, and I have been taking long walks almost daily while recording a ton of thoughts (which are transcribed and sent to Notion with an automation I built).
I also stopped working, largely stayed off social media, and full deleted Twitter from my phone.
Results so far:
I now have extreme clarity on my business' direction for the next year:
- How we'll improve team processes and communication
- Content schedule and structure
- Overall goals
I'm also feeling refreshed and much more motivated than I did going into the holidays.
Perhaps most importantly, I'm feeling good about truly embracing my role as CEO in my company.
As we've grown to a 10-person team, I've largely resisted this – but after this week, I'm ready to truly step up to the challenge.
I'm not sure that booking a cabin in the woods is needed (maybe I'll try it later this year), but I can say that what I've done has been incredibly helpful:
- Stepping away from the day-to-day grind
- Reading a lot (getting more inputs or "dots")
- Writing (in my case, talking) a lot
- Walking and spending time outdoors
This is likely something I'll continue doing each year, if not multiple times a year.
When you’re young, friendships come easy because everyone is still trying to figure out who they are and one of the best ways to do that is through friendships.
When you’re older, friendships become difficult because everyone already knows who they are and they don’t want to waste time with people who aren’t already aligned with them.

Our best threads about how we did it:
Life is going to be hard if you keep burning bridges at the slightest disagreement, there aren’t as many “good people who care” out there as you may think.
Delegation hack:
Take 1 unexpected day or long weekend OOO. No planning. No contact.
How does the team respond?
-> You’ll find what functions need to be fixed.
-> You’ll learn who stepped up & took on more than expected.
Tip: If they handled it, hand it off.
Focus on effort, not outcomes.
As Marcus Aurelius said, it’s insane to tie your wellbeing to things outside of your control. If you did your best, if you gave it your all, if you acted with your best judgment—that is a win…regardless of whether it’s a good or bad outcome.
5. Pay attention to new information:
Our brains are quick to form strong first impressions.
This means that our brains often underestimate the importance of new information.
Stupidity often comes from overlooking crucial new information.
Pay attention to it.
5 short rules for a better life:
1. Own the morning
2. Only focus on what’s in your control
3. Treat success and failure the same
4. Constantly ask ‘is this necessary?’
5. Love your fate (Amor Fati)
6. Life is just an extended version of the marshmallow test.
The ability to delay gratification today for a larger reward tomorrow is the ultimate competitive advantage.
People ask how I run 3 businesses while only working 20 hours a week.
My secret?
Over a decade of trial and error.
Here are 7 mistakes holding you back from building a big business without selling your soul:
One thing about choosing roles in corporate america:
There are two types of roles, you are a profit center (sales, product) or a cost center (HR, admin, finance).
If your goal is a career w/ the most money/impact, you want to be in the former.
Mental toughness is not something that develops in a rough moment.
The keys to mental toughness are found in how you handle the unplanned stressors of everyday life.
Sometimes big, Sometimes small.
You have your greatest training ground every day you open your eyes.
The biggest obstacle for most is starting.
For years I didn't start.
Now, a year + later, I couldn't have planned my way to this spot.
And I also couldn't have imagined it'd be this good.
Start.
They are running stories lying about what happened to Celine Dion. We all know what happened to her. Why lie about it, nobody else is taking that crap. Look at the data.
