"At the time I was in my second year of high school, and I had decided that if I couldn't make any further progress, I would quit AKB48. I thought I would consider getting a job or taking another path. I had decided that it would be a year where I would challenge myself with anything, no matter how difficult it was, so I applied.

We would keep practising, then eat without even knowing what time it was. The staff would guide us back to the dorms, we would sleep, and in the morning we'd be woken up and told that we have 10 minutes to get ready, and then we'd go back to the practice room again.

It really was like the military. But because of that, I thought, this is how South Korea is able to produce such amazing idols. I had a lot of fun. Just being able to experience being a Japanese idol is already amazing, but on top of that, I was able to experience what Korean idols go through too. I thought it was a really valuable experience.

The frustration I felt after making it all the way to the finals but ultimately failing to debut is what allows me to challenge myself with anything now!

I had taken part in the audition despite strong opposition from my family, so the disappointment was enormous. There was even a period when I couldn't bring myself to watch TV. Even when fans welcomed me back at handshake events, I spent my days struggling internally with conflicting emotions.

But I was saved by the fans who continued supporting me just as they always had, as well as the people who began supporting me because of the show. Thanks to them, I was able to overcome it.

Because I reached the finals, I was also selected in Senbatsu for 'NO WAY MAN' and my life changed completely. I was doing a different job every day. I’m really glad I was able to have an experience like that. Even now, people say, 'When you think of Shitao, you think of South Korea' so it has also become one of my selling points."
