🧵Of things I wish I knew before starting medical school (as someone with no medical background in my family).
I went to a PBL school, so some of my tips may not match up with other traditional schools, however, I hope they help.
Sometimes I get really frustrated at the lack of cohesiveness (probably not the right term) between specialities. Tell each other why a referral is terrible? Don't just shirk responsibility because you can't be asked to work a patient up. Sigh.
Woeful from the NHS AfC pay review body.
The DDRB must know this kind of recommendation will make doctors’ strikes practically inevitable.
Further, their credibility, efficacy, further and deeper reforms, and their continued existence will all rightly be called into question.
PAs are approved to do what? Take medical histories (with supervision), make medical judgements (with supervision), initiate supporting investigations (with supervision) and treatment (with supervision)? Like the supervising doctor, whilst not a doctor? https://t.co/LRVhZwyRqz
F2 doctors purposely delaying their own progression in order to stay employed as there is no work for them.
Similar stories about GP registrars who are going LTFT to delay progression as there are no GP jobs post CCT.
Medicine in the UK in 2025. Shambles.
Grow some backbone man .
Doctors where are you? Stand up to this nonsense .
In my profession I promise you I’d be damned if I let our assistants
1) tell me what to do
2) be paid more than me to do my job which they ARE NOT trained to do
3) allow @The_HCPC to endorse it
The @gmcuk has told drs to use @CMAPs_UK guidance- written by PAs who have NOT studied medicine and who can’t even be bothered to register with the @gmcuk to supervise MAPs, instead of the guidance set by the EXPERTs in medicine at the Royal Colleges
And you’re sitting there?
We need an urgent solution to the rising competition ratios.
Patients want to see more doctors.
Doctors want to be trained.
Surely the solution is obvious?
Do proper workforce planning.
And while training posts remain scarce, prospectively prioritise UK graduates
The GMC is not a patient safety focussed independent regulator. It is a PA/AA focussed propaganda arm of the government. In answer to the question why, simply #followTheMoney 💷💷💷
Fully agree
Time for the BMA and Royal Colleges to stand together and face the GMCs attempts to deregulate medicine
Gloves off
Endorse a vote of no confidence in the GMC
Maybe it's time to start a College of Anon accounts to prove how ridiculous it all is.
I'll be President (obvs). Who is getting the other roles?
Shoot!
Refuse to supervise. We didn't sign up for this. We haven't been trained to supervise non-medical professions and we aren't paid for the extra medicolegal liability so why should residents take on the risk?
Should the BMA/RCP publish guidance on formally declining to supervise?
Just catching up with what your friendly regulator @gmcuk has been up to. It seems it’s gone full regulatory capture with its latest genius move.
A couple of thoughts before I decide to come out of retirement and dig out my notes on medical negligence:
-this is a
1/3
Resident doctors placed in this position of supervision of PAs should contact BMA & refuse. You are responsible for their decisions and this has been confirmed in MPTS hearings.
Do not accept being the liability sponge for NHS trusts trying to make savings.
Just had large study of >2000 UK medical students accepted for publication
>50% of respondents felt the allocation system for newly qualified (FY) doctor posts was unfair
46% noticed negative impact on physical/mental health
Up to 48% are considering career outside the NHS
Normalise taking break from medical careers.
Don't stigmatise & question people who take career breaks.
Doctors take career breaks for all sorts of reasons
- Caring responsibilities
- Travelling
- Gaining skills outside medicine
- Recovery
- Spending quality time with family
- No specific reason
This should be encouraged.
This expectation of continues uninterrupted practice with pressure of exams & assessments can lead to serious burnout.
Officially do not like physicians associate. Saw me go ogling multiple drug doses and went "so you doctors don't know everything?"
What is wrong with you! The GMC have created people who don't even know the risks in what they're doing.
