George Washington’s Farewell Address was published #OTD in 1796 at the end of his second term. While not required to leave office, his decision to retire represented the first transfer of power from one President to another.

An Afghan general who led an 11th hour attempt to stop the Taliban from seizing control of Afghanistan is now—like so many other evacuees—an Uber driver in DC.
An important story by @margbrennan and team five years after the fall of Kabul.

I broke my own rule to never post about AI detection as it is fraught in many ways.
The problem is that if you use AI a lot, you know AI writing on sight, which makes the difficulty of objectively proving that AI use to others very frustrating
Two weeks without mobile internet improved mental health more than antidepressants and reversed roughly 10 years of attentional decline.
Screen time dropped 49% (314 to 161 min/day).
I don’t think a lot of people understand how bad it has gotten in elementary school
Parents are fighting to keep their kids away from screens and junk videos only to have their public schools give away the game
Still more evidence that EdTech harmed American education: Across states, the year that the state imposed mandates requiring computers/tablets, that's the year that test scores stopped rising and in most cases started falling.

This is a contemporary permutation of the 'why do I need to teach things that kids can just Google?'
A car can get you somewhere faster than walking, so why bother learning to walk? Because you need to walk to the car. Walking takes you to places cars can't reach.

As we say in The Amazing Generation, the "tech wizards" want YOUR kids to spend all day.
@howie_hua Yo onk, I saw in a recent video that you made a delineation between multiplier and multiplicand. I've been giving a vocabulary quiz to my students for years where they have to use these words in classic format:
x
y
_______
Would x or y be the multiplier in your opinion?
