As of January 2, 2025, there are no credible reports indicating that China has declared a state of emergency due to an epidemic overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums. However, in late 2023, China experienced a significant increase in respiratory illnesses, particularly among children in northern regions. This surge was attributed to known pathogens such as influenza, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2, following the relaxation of stringent COVID-19 measures. 

In response, China’s National Disease Control and Prevention Administration initiated a pilot monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin to enhance early detection and response capabilities. This initiative aims to establish efficient procedures for laboratories to report and for agencies to verify and manage cases. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been monitoring the situation and has requested detailed information from China regarding the surge in respiratory illnesses. Chinese health authorities have stated that no unusual or novel pathogens have been detected, attributing the increase to known respiratory viruses. 

It’s important to note that while there has been an uptick in respiratory infections, there is no official declaration of a state of emergency in China related to this situation. Health authorities continue to monitor and manage the situation through enhanced surveillance and public health measures.
