In Masaka district, central Uganda, small-scale farmers are rewriting the story of "Waste" through rearing red earthworms that convert Kitchen scraps, cow dung and plant residues into nutrient-rich compost.
@julius_osungi, a member of our 2nd @Agroecology_Sch cohort, highlights how these 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 systems are helping farmers to produce organic fertiliser, by turning waste into a valuable farm input, in his insightful piece.

When you integrate livestock and crop farming, it fosters a symbiotic relationship between the two on your farm.
Animal droppings are used as manure, while crop residues serve as animal feeds, strengthening the agroecological principles of recycling & synergy.

To enable a just transition to agroecology, we need credible, context-specific evidence that strengthens our voice in policy spaces. With the right data, we can better defend certain agroecological initiatives in national development frameworks.
This is what @ESAFFUG is doing in collaboration with scientists and academic institutions, building an evidence-based research framework to measure the scope of agroecological transition under the #ECOTOPIA programme.

@ESAFFUG is participating in the CSO FY2026/27 Post Budget Dialogue under the theme “Budgeting for Investment and Economic Opportunities” at Hotel Africana, Kampala.
The Budget has allocated UGX 2.26 trillion to agro-industrialization. Participants have emphasized the need for this fund to benefit small-scale farmers, who constitute the largest share of Uganda’s agricultural workforce, through support to farmer-led sustainable agriculture initiatives, such as rebuilding soil health.
Mr. Moses Kaggwa, the Ag. Director Economic Affairs at @mofpedU, urged small-scale farmers to utilize available government funding to start income-generating initiatives. “We are putting a lot of money in PDM, Emyooga, get one million shillings, start a poultry project. If they are well organized, they can also seek financing from the Microfinance Support Centre,” he said.
