I once again watched Dr Rajkumar starred Kannada super-hit movie made in 1971.

Every time I watch this movie, I lose myself thinking about the acting prowess of Dr. Rajkumar, fondly called as Annavaru.

I have seen so many actors doing this ‘Riches-to-rags’ role. But, Annavaru aces it in this movie. To take just one example; compare the opening scene when he walks briskly to his luxury car outside Kasturi Nivasa, with that of the subtle limping walk from the grave of the child he loved so much.

What makes it so special is that the later shot was from the side angle and above the waist. But still one can make out subtle limp from the way Annavaru slumps his shoulders. It is at this point, when Annavaru gets up from the grave of Rani, he conveys that he finally gives into his destiny.

Even just one scene before, when Chandru offers to give the Nivasa, Annavaru rejects it saying that he has the strength to earn it himself. The way he walks out slamming the door shows he hasn’t given in. But the death of the child he loved so much breaks him. Every man has a breaking point. Annavaru conveys it brilliantly.

Of course, there are so many other scenes in the movie where Annavaru shines like a diamond. Pages won’t be enough to describe them all.

We are just lucky that we had a man of his calibre and greatness lived among us and given us such movies that we can treasure forever.

So much to write about his peerless acting and his movies. May be some other time.
