*Transforming Bura into a Food Basket*

The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation under my leadership is turning the tide in Bura, Tana River County. The recently developed 26KM Bura Gravity Canal, commissioned by H.E the President @WilliamsRuto last year is bringing life to the arid land.

The canal that was contructed by the National Irrigation Authority enabled provision of 11 cubic metres of water per second up from the initial 3.5 cubic metres per second that was flowing through the pump fed canal. Water is currently being abstracted from Korakora via gravity to farms in Bura 76Km away.

The new gravity canal enabled onboarding of private investors to lease land in Bura for large scale commercial production of rice and sugar cane. It also enabled the local farmers to expand the irrigated acreage from 6,000 acres to 12,000 acres and undertake cropping twice a year.

One of such investor is Tana River sugar Company who leased 700 acres for trials of sugar cane seed. They established 1 center pivot that covers 75 acres and planted cane seed for multiplication and expansion last year in June (2025).

The first seed cane is ready and an additional 6 more center pivots have been constructed increasing the area under seed cane in Bura 525 acres. With transplanting of seed cane from the nursery set to commence this week, an additional 85,000 acres will be issued by February for development by three competitively onboarded private investors namely: 50,000 acres for cane production and 35,000 acres for Rice Production.

This additional acreage will translate to more food production, reduction of poverty, creation of employment opportunities and lowering of the cost of living as espoused in the President's Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda ( BeTA) transforming Bura into a thriving Agricultural hub.
