After nearly 14 years as prime minister, Mark Rutte left office in a way that stunned people around the world. 🚲

No motorcade.

No luxury vehicle.

No grand farewell ceremony.

After officially handing power to his successor, Dick Schoof, the longtime Dutch leader simply got on his bicycle and rode away.

Rutte served as prime minister of the Netherlands from 2010 to 2024, making him one of Europe's longest-serving leaders. Yet when his time in office came to an end, his exit was remarkably ordinary.

The image quickly went viral.

Here was a man who had led an entire country for almost 14 years leaving work exactly like millions of Dutch citizens do every day.

Quietly.

Casually.

On two wheels.

For many people, the moment represented something bigger than politics. It was a reminder that leadership does not always need to be surrounded by status, spectacle, or displays of power.

There were no flashing lights, no long convoy, and no attempt to make the moment about himself.

Just a former prime minister heading home on a bicycle.

Regardless of political views, the scene left a lasting impression.

In a world where some leaders struggle to let go of power, Rutte handed over the keys, waved goodbye, and cycled away into the city.

It's important for MPs to raise their ideas/concerns respectfully, but blowing whistles inside parliament is disruptive and undermines decorum. Clear rules should be enforced, firm oversight, and proportionate sanctions are needed to maintain ordwr and parliamentary dignity.

Conflicts that end through negotiated settlements, like the one in Somalia, require consolidation through consultation, negotiation, and compromise. The key fact is that no group could achieve total military victory. Therefore, since the establishment of the third republic in 2000, the Somali governments have consistently engaged in negotiations with their rivals on important issues, often outside the country.

If there is a will, the government's desire for consultation and the opposition's need for proper negotiation can be combined. The government should consult with as many stakeholders as possible—what it did today is fine. However, it MUST eventually negotiate with the opposition to reach a compromise on the constitution and the 2026 election. This is the only path out of the current stagnation. President @HassanSMohamud must confront this reality.

Somalia bans Taiwanese nationals from entry, Somaliland rejects it

The Somali government has ordered airline companies not to accept passports, travel documents and consular credentials issued by Taiwan to be used for entry, transit or departure from Somalia. Failure to apply this directive will result in a regulatory action, says Somalia civil aviation authority.

Somalia says Taiwan’s diplomatic office in Hargeisa was set up without the consent of the federal government and violates Somalia’s sovereignty.

Somaliland in a statement rejected the move, says Somalia has neither legal nor administrative jurisdiction within the territory of Somaliland.

Somaliland and Taiwan established diplomatic relations in 2020, a move that at the time drew condemnations from Somalia and China. China and Somalia, both consider Taiwan and Somaliland as their territories, respectively; and have committed to respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial unity.
