What critical conversations should we be having on issues of race, religion and politics underlying the current economic and political crisis in Sri Lanka? I wrote a piece for @jamhoormedia detailing some of my thoughts. Would like to hear your views https://t.co/vKppOo3vFY
Devastating. Zephaniah is a legendary figure.
Reading his poems as a child opened my mind, as it did for many millions more. His words on refugees and racism were inspirational.
I never knew this Eelam Tamil connection though.
He will be sorely missed.
Last week, Prof. Olive Demar was summarily fired from Smith College for teaching about Palestine, including an essay by Noel Ignatiev.
Today, she speaks out:

The phrase "humanitarian crisis in Gaza" does the work of liberal white magic by *disappearing* apartheid, settler conquest/occupation, and actual genocidal state terror. As i explained to my 15 yr old daughter last night, @UN exists to preserve the global order of empire (duh).
Four weeks ago, Judge Saravanarajah told the Dept. of Archaeology they couldn't keep ignoring court orders to stop installing fake archaeo-propaganda in Kurunthurmalai.
@Dr_B_Pearl Omg! This persons actually recommending using “i feel” language?!! Like as a person of color you know saying THAT is like the worst thing to say. 🤦🏾♀️
“We know we were colonized. We know they took over our schools. We know they took away our language. We know all of this, so we're just trying to bring all those things back.” CRCC's @richardflory & @ShindoStreet profile #Hawaiian#Indigenous activists.

Images out of #Libya following extreme rainfall from the "#Medicane" (Mediterranean "tropical-like" cyclone) that made landfall this weekend are indicative of quite violent flood inundations. Based on these images, rumors of multiple dam failures unfortunately seem plausible.
I have given an interview to Germany's @NDRinfo on the current situation of Tamils in Sri Lanka and press freedom in Sri Lanka

“I was 15 years old when the genocide against Tamils came to a brutal end in 2009. And there continues to be a structural genocide against the Tamil population."
I am floored as I read this forthcoming book by @black_poethics. The first chapter alone has me highlighting and furiously writing notes. This is an important text!!
You need to grab a copy if you are remotely interested in Black mobilization and Black futures.
something that worries me after being part of #abolitionist collective projects for over 25 years: how (what abolitionists call) "non-reformist reforms" get infiltrated by a liberal counterinsurgency machine and turned into "procedure" based technologies of pacification
Good article. That headline is particularly poignant though juxtaposed against Sri Lanka's record number of enforced disappearances (second highest in the world as of 2009 according to the UN WGEID, behind Iraq) because they are the same story. Revolt and repression.
Exciting new journal feeling a critical need! Often feel a dearth of scholarship on the intersection of queer studies and religion. Excited to see what emerges from this platform. and fee free -open access!
@melissamwilcox Meeting such an important need! Often feel a dearth of scholarship on the intersection of queer studies and religion. Excited to see what emerges from this platform. and fee free! Woot!
@Weather_West@NWSLosAngeles Had to drive through the area to go home about an hour ago and it certainly was quite a downpour on the 101 with low visibility but no flooding of 101.
Ethnographic journalism can build empathy and familiarity across cultures. In this ReligionLink guide, @kchitwood provides religion reporters with practical advice for sensitively immersing themselves in unfamiliar communities.
