I delivered my address to the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

I used the opportunity to address climate change's impact on global progress and the urgent need to end the cycle of empty promises at COP. I emphasised the necessity for concrete actions to tackle food insecurity's root causes. I highlighted my country’s agriculture policy, aiming for 35% of agro-businesses to be owned by women and 60% by young people. I called for action to defend human rights globally and reiterated the need to end the embargo on Cuba. I also urged the UN to assert itself as a leader in global peace, sustainable development, and protecting human rights and dignity for all.

The Government of Guyana has approved the flyover of two US Navy Aircraft F/A-18F Super Hornets in Georgetown at 2:00pm on 9 May 2024. This exercise is being coordinated by the Guyana Defence Force in collaboration with the #UnitedStatesSouthernCommand.

The exercise is being conducted as part of the defense cooperation pact between #Guyana and the #USA and seeks to deepen the ongoingsecurity cooperation programme between our two countries.

Today, I received a cheque worth GY$110.8 million from the National Organising Committee of the Ramadan Village. The funds were raised through donations from Guyanese to support humanitarian efforts in #Palestine. The donations were collected at an event held at the Ramadan Village earlier this month, and further donations were received from individuals afterwards.
The funds will now be handed over to @UNRWA

Security Council Press Statement on Guyana – Venezuela Situation

The members of the Security Council expressed their concern about the possible escalation of tensions between Venezuela and Guyana. They urged the parties to exercise maximum restraint, reminding them of their obligations to comply with the Order of Provisional Measures issued by the International Court of Justice on 1 December 2023.

The Council also underlined the importance of maintaining regional peace and security and ensuring that the Latin America and Caribbean region remains a Zone of Peace. In this regard, it commended regional efforts which resulted in the conclusion of the Declaration of Peace and Dialogue of Argyle of 14 December 2023 in which Guyana and Venezuela, inter alia, agreed that any controversy between the two states will be resolved in accordance with international law, including the Geneva Agreement of 1966.

The members of the Security Council urged the parties to resolve their differences through peaceful means and to uphold their obligations under international law and the United Nations Charter. They also stressed the importance of regional actors playing a facilitating role in easing the tensions.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the importance of upholding the principles of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity and the prohibition to any party, on the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of another state, as enshrined in Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.
