THREAD: As #Omicron surges and our systems strain, I wanted to share my #COVID19 experience in NYC last month. It was actually a hopeful window into what a society where we look out for one another and a government that is set up to truly care for us could look like.
I wrote about how the American death toll from COVID-19 is now greater than the death toll of the Civil War (750,000).
Behind these numbers are real people. One of them was Yvonne Brown. I attended her funeral last week. She was 41. This is still with us. https://t.co/LXlccc0HML
Over the course of the last 14 months, we collected the names of loved ones & neighbors in our community taken from us during the pandemic. Today, we placed our #CovidMemorial banner at the entrance of our public library to honor their lives & care for one another. #NamingTheLost
#NamingtheLost in Red Hook.

This memorial was created in recognition of the 15K in nursing homes who were taken from us.
Sadly, their names are not available to us, but we know they were people who were cherished — people who were parents, siblings, mentors, teachers, neighbors, friends.—@alexaforcouncil
15,000 loved ones, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, mentors, teachers, neighbors, and friends.
15,000 lives stolen from us because New York State treats elders & disabled people as disposable.
Nothing will ever bring back the 15,000 cherished lives stolen by COVID-19 in NY nursing homes. But we can do everything in our power to ensure nothing like this ever happens again. #NamingTheLost
This is today at noon in Red Hook BK -- join us to mourn the 15K loved ones who died of COVID in nursing homes in 2020.
We will honor each and every person, and we will fight like hell to save the millions of people who still need #FairPay4HomeCare to survive.
#NobodyIsDisposable, and all of us count.

March 25th: One year ago today, the Cuomo administration issued a directive that led to 9,000 recovering coronavirus patients being transferred from hospitals into nursing homes. #NamingTheLost
I'm spending this #MartinLutherKingDay putting together a memorial to #COVID victims. Picture after picture, name after name. It's devastating. Please join me tomorrow and RT to honor all 400,000 lives cut short, including my Dad. #MarkedByCOVID https://t.co/r9DvypP124
I think we should have a federal holiday to honor the people we’ve lost to COVID. It’s the least we can do to make space for all the grief chaos has forced us to displace.
