The last time the U.S. had permanent daylight saving time, children used flashlights on the way to school. Commuters drove in the dark. Florida called a special session to try to change the clocks back.
That attempt in the 1970s quickly became unpopular. https://t.co/CwgoOlgAPW
🚨🚨🚨🚨Today the U.S. House passed the Sunshine Protection Act, advancing legislation that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent nationwide.
This is the biggest legislative step this issue has taken in years but it is not law.
The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate, where there is still an opportunity for it to be debated, amended, or rejected. If you care about health and circadian biology, this is the time to speak up.
The scientific case against permanent DST has become increasingly strong:
• Morning light is the most powerful signal for synchronizing the human circadian clock.
• Permanent DST delays sunrise for much of the year, especially in winter, reducing exposure to morning light when our brains need it most.
• Later sunrises are associated with chronic circadian misalignment, sleep loss, poorer mood, reduced alertness, and increased cardiometabolic risk.
• Studies comparing western versus eastern portions of time zones consistently show worse health outcomes where people experience later sunrises despite sharing the same clock time.
• The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and numerous sleep and circadian experts recommend permanent Standard Time, not permanent DST, as the option that best aligns with human biology.
The argument for permanent DST is largely one of convenience and preference for lighter evenings. The argument for permanent Standard Time is one of physiology and public health.
If you believe our laws should reflect the best available scientific evidence, now is the time to respectfully contact your U.S. Senators. Tell them that while ending the twice-yearly clock changes is a worthy goal, permanent Daylight Saving Time is not the healthiest solution. Ask them instead to support permanent Standard Time, which preserves the morning light our circadian system depends on.
Please REPOST this. The Senate has not yet voted, and informed voices can still make a difference.
@LeaderJohnThune is the Senate majority leader that will determine when this legislation comes to the Senate for debate. He should know how you feel.
The science strongly supports ending the twice-yearly clock changes.
Where the debate begins is which time should be permanent.
Most sleep and circadian experts favor permanent standard time, not permanent daylight saving time, because morning light is the strongest cue for aligning our biological clocks.
As @hubermanlab has noted, we often confuse what feels good (later sunsets) with what is biologically optimal (earlier morning light).
America already made daylight saving time permanent once. In December 1973, 79% of Americans supported it and Nixon signed it into law. By February 1974, eight weeks into the experiment, support had collapsed to 42%. The policy never changed. Winter arrived.
Sunrise in Washington DC came at 8:27am. Kids left for school in total darkness, carrying flashlights and wearing reflective tape. When Congress moved to repeal, members cited the deaths of eight Florida schoolchildren in the first weeks of the change.
The energy case collapsed too. The whole point was the oil embargo, and the Department of Transportation concluded the fuel savings were too small to matter. Ten months after signing it, Congress repealed it and Ford put the country back on standard time.
There's a mechanism that makes this cycle repeat: permanent DST is only ever voted on when the sun is up. Polls run in the abstract, votes happen in warm months, and the benefit, a free hour of evening light, is easy to imagine year-round. The cost is concentrated in about 10 weeks of dark winter mornings and only becomes real after implementation. So the policy polls beautifully right up until January.
Today's vote happened in July. The 1974 law passed in December, right before the exact winter that killed it. If this clears the Senate, the first real test arrives in January 2027, when sunrise in Indianapolis comes after 9am.
Sleep researchers have watched this loop for 50 years, which is why the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the AMA, and the National Sleep Foundation all back the opposite reform, permanent standard time. Congress just picked the one version of clock reform America has already tried, hated, and repealed.
"I'm thrilled that, because i work for the dumbest administration in American history, i can record myself for social media as the dumbest Energy Secretary."
I am officially nominating Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) for the Nobel Peace Prize.
No President in History has ended the same war so many times.
Our Dear Leader has ended the war with Iran at least 38 times by CNN’s count.
No President has ever done this before.
And he is nowhere near finished ending it.
It’s a record worthy of the Nobel committee’s recognition. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
To everyone celebrating the first flight on Qatar Force One today, understand what you are actually applauding.
A foreign government handed the sitting President of the United States a $400 million plane. American taxpayers then paid to retrofit it, with an estimated cost of at least another $400 million (some estimates far higher), for security and communications work in a Texas hangar since last September.
When Trump leaves office, the plane does not stay with the government. Ownership transfers to his presidential library foundation. In other words, he keeps it.
You are being asked to treat pure corruption as normal, to shrug at a President personally profiting from a foreign gift the taxpayers paid to upgrade.
In any other administration this would be the scandal that ends a presidency.
With Trump, it’s Wednesday.

Thank you to the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC for investing so big in Randy @Villegas_CA22. Randy is fighting for working families and we need him in Congress.
When MFA PAC invests, we WIN. @Villegas_CA22 is on the front lines fighting for working families in the Central Valley — and he just won the CA-22 Democratic nomination. MFA PAC invested $180,000 in this race, alongside $400,000 from CPC PAC and more than $500,000 from our progressive partners, plus thousands of organizing calls to fight back against corporate interests and put a true progressive at the center of this race. The people sent a clear message: they want someone who fights for them, not for corporate donors. This is what people power looks like.
Primary ballots drop tomorrow, June 8th! Don't forget to make a voting plan and return your ballot by June 30th. Let's do this!

I’m deeply honored to have my colleague and former Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus @Nanette4CA’s endorsement and support in my race for re-election. It was great to have her at the Puerto Rican Parade on the LES yesterday.🇵🇷
Rep. Barragán is a committed advocate for working families and immigrant communities, and I look forward to continuing our work together as we fight against Trump’s cruel immigration dragnet.
At the Lower East Side Puerto Rican Day Parade with my colleague @danielsgoldman today!
We need fighters like Dan who aren’t afraid to take on Donald Trump & rubber stamp Republicans in Congress. Early vote starts Sat. 6/13 - so get out & vote to send Dan back to Washington!
Breaking:
Senate Republicans just rammed through Trump's massive $70 billion bill to fund ICE and Border Patrol, 52-47.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski was the only Republican to vote against the bill.
It now heads to the House.
Republican policies are making groceries more expensive. But that’s not enough, so they decide to cut funding that helps pregnant women and children buy healthy foods.
Vote them out!
As grocery prices continue to rise nationally, the House passed an appropriations bill that would cut $141 million in funding for a program that helps pregnant women and children purchase healthy foods. https://t.co/NJ8vGuBc0P
Secretary of State Marco Rubio was forced to watch multiple clips of Trump falling asleep in meetings after he claimed the president has never done so. https://t.co/ue62y8f3YS
