Jewelry sold as silver on Amazon was found to contain up to 9,000 times the legal limit for cadmium.
An investigation by The Sunday Times bought inexpensive jewelry from Amazon and TikTok Shop and sent the items to the Birmingham Assay Office for independent laboratory testing.
One Amazon ring marketed as “925 silver” contained 92.3 percent cadmium. That level is more than 9,000 times the legal limit for jewelry sold in the United Kingdom. Genuine 925 sterling silver must contain at least 92.5 percent silver.
Charms on a bracelet sold through TikTok Shop contained 33 percent cadmium, nearly 3,300 times the permitted amount. Both marketplaces removed the products after they were notified of the test results.
Cadmium is a highly toxic heavy metal that can build up in the body over time. Prolonged exposure can harm the kidneys, bones, and respiratory system, and the metal is classified as a human carcinogen.
The United Kingdom and European Union set the maximum cadmium content in jewelry at 0.01 percent.
Briefly touching a single contaminated item is unlikely to cause cadmium poisoning, because absorption through healthy skin is limited. Experts express greater concern about prolonged contact, jewelry worn against pierced or broken skin, and items that children might put in their mouths or swallow by accident.
The findings also highlight a wider problem with low-cost products offered by third-party sellers online. Items can be advertised as silver even when buyers have no reliable way to verify the actual metal content.
A separate UK safety report published in June identified an Amazon-listed silver-colored ring that contained 86.7 percent cadmium. Authorities classified the product as a serious chemical risk and rejected the shipment at the border.
Consumers are advised to remain cautious of unusually cheap jewelry, vague material descriptions, and sellers that provide little information about manufacturing standards or safety testing.
