I finally understand what Machiavelli meant when he said, "Never play fair in a game where others cheat." It doesn't mean become evil. It means stop being naive. Stop bringing honesty to people who study manipulation, stop giving access to people who weaponize closeness, and stop expecting clean hands from people who already showed you they'll throw dirt.
Sometimes wisdom is not revenge.

The US empire is waging a neocolonial assault all across Latin America.

The US blatantly meddled in Colombia's election. Trump and Marco Rubio backed the far-right, multimillionaire candidate Abelardo de la Espriella (a defender of fascist paramilitaries), and there are serious irregularities in the results.

Colombia's current left-wing President Gustavo Petro has been very pro-Palestine and pro-China. He cut relations with the genocidal Israeli regime and joined China's Belt and Road Initiative.

De la Espriella vows to form a close alliance with the US and Israel, and minimize relations with China. Just a few weeks before the elections, he was in Florida, meeting with far-right US politicians who are close allies of Trump and Rubio.

The same thing is happening across the continent. The US carried out a blatant electoral coup in Honduras, to put a drug cartel-linked, pro-US, pro-Israel, anti-China puppet in power.

The US is currently trying to steal the election in Peru, to put the daughter of the fascist former dictator in power.

The US empire already has far-right puppets in power in Argentina, Chile, and Ecuador. The leader of Chile is the Pinochet-defending son of a Nazi war criminal. The dictator of Ecuador is the son of the country's richest billionaire oligarch.

Brazil is the next target of the US empire's neocolonial assault, in this year's election.

This is the colonial Monroe Doctrine in the neo-fascist era.

Game theory explains why forgiving someone who has not paid a cost for betraying you is a vicious mistake dressed up as a virtue. Forgiveness without consequence never 'resets' the relationship. It updates the other person's model of your response function.
You now taught them that betrayal costs nothing. So, the next defection is cheaper than the first one. You have effectively lowered the price of breaking your trust.
Genuine repair requires that the cost of defection be visible and proportional before the relationship resumes. Everything else is an invitation to defection.

This is the consolidation and hardening of the multi-pronged US attempt to reclaim Colombia in the upcoming presidential elections.
First, after the Venezuela attack, Trump's threats of military intervention.
Then, the use of the US's Ecuadorian proxy to destabilise Colombia's economy and fabricate a border crisis and violate its territorial sovereignty.
Now, Lawfare against the president to create a false narrative, especially egregious given how Trump has given the real narcos a free ride (think Juan Orlando Hernández).
None of this comes as a surprise. Colombia was for years the US deep state's most committed vassal in the Western Hemisphere. Under Petro, Colombia has taken the first steps to try and emancipate itself from this historical subjugation. Which is why the Miami neocons who are running the show in the Trump administration's Monroeist approach to Latin America are scaling up their direct interference in the Colombian elections.
