NEW: Researchers at UCSF have released a first-of-its-kind report documenting dozens of health complications resulting from abortion bans, including patients turned away with cesarean scar ectopic pregnancies. https://t.co/EphOizFnYt
The maternal mortality rate in the U.S. is the highest it’s been since 1965. If that doesn’t make you furious—it should.
By passing @RepUnderwood, @RepAdams, and @SenBooker’s #Momnibus, we will make the investments we need so that moms can have safe and healthy pregnancies.
“Legislators with integrity should sustain Gov. Roy Cooper’s likely veto of Senate Bill 20. If the leaders want to change state abortion laws, it needs to be done in the open, fully using the process intended for all legislation…” https://t.co/mUat3wH4QP
A woman was denied necessary stabilizing care – not because of the judgment of her doctors, but because the hospital policies would not allow an abortion to be performed.
Today, HHS announced we are investigating those hospitals for violating the law.
This legislation was pushed through before many lawmakers (even sponsors!) had the chance to fully read it. Thank you @rebeccakreitzer for this analysis of what this abortion bill means for the people of NC.
This weekend I wrote ~5k words on the new NC abortion law. This is the most detailed analysis you will find - including explaining what has changed and contextualizing that info. I’ve never written something I so desperately want people to read. https://t.co/KQ6HYhaXFZ
Proud of @PiedmontHealth_ for taking such a clear stand against harmful bills like HB808 and SB20. We will continue to be a safe space for our patients and staff 💕 And also #OrganizetheSouth 😘
Ok now that the shock has worn off (jk, it probably never will) I have to say a humongous thank you to the @PulitzerPrizes committee for recognizing this piece & for giving the remarkable story of Omar ibn Said more light.
It is important for everyone involved in the #pregnancy and #postpartum experience to know the signs and symptoms of #preeclampsia. Education and empowerment saves lives! Share this graphic with your friends and family to pass the information along. #PreeclampsiaAwarenessMonth
Thank you @DocCGreen 🤩 for sharing your experiences and your brilliance and challenging all of us in medical education to do better.

✔️ My PUMP Act is now in effect!
Every parent should be able to pump safely and privately at work, and my legislation has extended this protection to nearly 9 million workers!

3. This monster bill also resurrects two anti-abortion bills that were previously defeated at the General Assembly: a so-called “born alive” bill (heavy emphasis on those quotation marks) and a ban that attempts to restrict abortion based on a patient’s reason.
2. This bill requires a rules review commission (appointed by the legislature) to rewrite regulations on clinics by October 1; the commission could require all clinics to have an Ambulatory Surgical Center license. Spoiler alert: clinics don't need this to operate safely!
1. this bill is proposing THREE mandated, in-person appts to receive medication abortion care. *each* appt will have to be 72 hours apart. the blanket 72-hour waiting period NC CURRENTLY has *already* places an undue burden onto folks trying to access care. Unmatched cruelty.
I want to be clear here: Maternal mortality in the US is a crisis. And there are extremely important raced and classed patterns in mortality. It's also clear that there is a relationship between restrictive abortion policies and mortality. 🧵https://t.co/gDeVeAPTrD
I read all 46 pages of the "Women, Children and Families Act" introduced by the NCGOP last night and to be voted on today. I want to tell you about some of the big issues with the bill, and I want to encourage you to reach out to your policymakers ASAP. 🧵 https://t.co/3OkqaDdDah
