Imagine a military general in the UK or US breaking his oath, trashing the constitution, and taking over the country through brute force, imprisoning the democratically elected Prime Minister/President along with the entire political leadership.

Would the @TheEconomist be asking a ridiculous question on who is likely to "prevail"?

But standards of journalism change when it comes to former colonies, where every new military dictator isn't only endorsed but also cheered by the Western leaders, institutions, and their media.

ps: Dropping the "General" title from his name wouldn't turn him into a civilian. Try worse next time.

Mahrang Baloch should not be in prison. Women and girls in Balochistan have suffered for years as their male family members were routinely arrested and forcibly disappeared. They deserve the life that everyone deserves: daughters who can go to school, fathers who come home at night.

I stand with my sisters in Pakistan who face harassment and abuse, who are imprisoned for speaking out. This is not new — throughout our history women like Asma Jahangir, Farida Shaheed, Khawar Mumtaz, Hina Jilani and even Fatima Jinnah suffered persecution for standing up. Today, it is Imaan Mazari and Mahrang Baloch.

Rather than addressing the horror of forced disappearances, the anti-terrorism court is targeting those who speak out against the oppression. Mahrang and her fellow activists must be released.

Deeply disturbed by the news coming from across the LoC. The killing of more than a dozen protesting civilians and police personnel is extremely sad. The Government there should know better than to use force to handle public grievance and demands in this manner.
When people take to the streets to express their concerns, it is a signal that they seek to be heard. It is the responsibility of those in authority to listen, engage and peacefully resolve the matter, rather than allow it to escalate into violence, arbitrary arrests and loss of life.
Hope and pray that better sense prevails and the matter is handled with maturity while addressing the concerns of the people.
