There's a even bigger danger in 2026 that if Burnham takes power in "coronation", he'll have had less public scrutiny than any recent incoming PM. Every PM since at least 1945 came to power having held one of 3 great offices of state, or had been Leader of Opposition.
If it is a "coronation" the for scrutiny purposes, Andy Burnham should volunteer to be grilled very soon and at length by the Commons Liaison Committee which comprises all the select committee chairs.
The UK borrowed almost as much in May 2026 alone (£23.3bn), as it did during the entire 2018/19 fiscal year (£23.5bn).
This is a slow motion disaster and almost no one is talking about it.
The fundamental reason why any change of Prime Minister is utterly irrelevant to the massive wider issues and the painful decisions that need to be made
Reform would not have won Makerfield even if every other party on the Right stood down.
Meanwhile, in Aberdeen, the Conservatives took half the votes despite Reform being on the ballot paper.
We united the city behind a genuine offer.
Had I done a deal, our emphatic victory in Aberdeen would have been diminished. People would have sneered that we only won because Reform stepped aside. A win 'helped' by Reform would have been no win at all.
That’s why I am not doing any deals. If you want the Right -Vote Conservative
5bps of GDP for something the private sector is entirely willing to fund with a govt say-so is pretty remarkable.
May there be so many £100 notes on the pavement
Golden boy of Labour Together. Resigns in disgrace over Labour Together (cause of soft left and hard left). Hands his set to Burnham (which none of them were prepared to do). Huge risk. Not only redeemed himself with the soft left but he will be much more powerful than before.
Pretty much a dream night for the Conservatives. Scottish Tories win their first Westminster by-election since 1967. Reform underwhelm in Makerfield. At a local level, the party picks up two gains from Reform and retains a ward in Hillingdon.
I cannot believe this has all happened from one tweet but, by some miracle and some hard work over the past 24 hours, Hedgehog Ties will be available for purchase once again!
After quite a few emails and telephone calls to the wonderful staff of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and of Ryder and Amies in Cambridge, I've organised a new production of a Navy Silk Hedgehog Tie, the first in over thirty years!
Ties will cost £45 each with £10 of that £45 going directly towards the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (I do not receive a single penny from the sale of these ties, £35 is purely the cost of production + materials per tie)
Pre-orders will be open for two weeks and, afterwards, the ties will go to production! They should take approx. 10 weeks to be completed.

This is particularly poor now that TV history documentaries have become so lightweight and dull compared to even a couple of decades ago. The YouTube offering is far superior to most TV output. But I guess depriving young people of non regime-approved knowledge is half the point
