While I agree with the conclusion of this article, the analysis is flawed in several aspects. It suggests that Russian society is unified in mobilization for war and things are going great for Putin. The evidence & logic, however, are… meh.

Yuliya Navalnaya: "If you are against Putin, come to polling stations, stop there, stay silent for a moment, and go home".
Legion Free Russia: "Great idea, Yuliya! We are mounting our tanks, and heading towards the nearest polling station in Kursk right now!"
Interesting: in his huge interview to Russian @novaya 2 weeks ago, Navalny’s top aid Volkov urged NOT to donate to Ukrainian Army, called those who urge to donate - provocators, and urged to donate instead to Navalny’s foundation which creates Internet-content about politics.

I wasn't going to say anything, but this was the straw that broke the camel's—my—back... Navalnyi's death was sad and tragic from the personal perspective, but he was a Russian politician and supported Russia's claims to Crimea, arguing that, if he were elected president, he would not honor international agreements and return the peninsula to Ukraine. If I recall correctly, the wording was, "it's not a sandwich, and so cannot be returned," or along those lines.
Innocent Ukrainian citizens are dying in Ukraine every day, almost everyrone of us knows someone who has died from a Russian attack, or we have friends who have lost their loved ones. Prominent Ukrainian journalists, writers, poets, artists, scholars have died in this war. On the institutional level, there was not a word about that, not even ONE minute of silence formally called by the Association.
If individual members of the organization want to mourn the death of a Russian politician, then they may do so privately, of course. But it strikes one as deeply inappropriate for a professional association such as the @AATSEEL_Tweets (American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages) to formally organize a memorial reading for a Russian politician, whoever he might be. Does one really need to draw parallels from 20th-century history in order to make this clear??
This is incredibly disappointing and hurtful. And, in general, for all the talk about "decolonization" of the field of Slavic studies, Russian studies easily dominate 95% of all the conference panels. Instead of exploring other Slavic and Eastern European languages and cultures, the absolute majority of the panels are still about the Russian language, the Russian classics (again, or sometimes with a slight "decolonization" spin), or Russian non-classics, even when the panel title speaks of "Slavic" topics.
For all the good intentions of some (whose integrity I don't question), for most colleagues in the field, "decolonization" is a mere simulacrum, just one of the many trends in the field, and it will pass, and they will go back to normal, as they always have.
Similar to how many white folks have been claiming that they are not racists by saying that they have a/many Black friend/s or have dated a Black person, so are the Russianists in the field claiming that they have no imperial designs by chanting the "decolonization" mantra without making any real changes and keeping their absolute dominance over the field.
If you really want to change something for the better, please learn a bit about Slavic and Eastern European cultures that are not Russian (or are not produced in Russian). Better yet, hire a specialist for your department who can teach you and your students about Polish, Belarussian, Romanian, Hungarian, Latvian, Ukrainian, etc. cultures.
Organizing memorials for Russian politicians at a professional organization's meeting is definitely not decolonizing the field.
⚡️Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of 🇺🇦Ukraine Zaluzhny
Dear combat brothers and sisters!
Today, on the day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, I thank everyone who does their hard work.
I bow my head before your feat! In front of every soldier, sergeant and officer. Especially in front of those who today, in the heat of battle and under fire, in cold, frozen trenches and ruins, firmly hold the defense and destroy the insidious enemy.
It is you, regardless of titles and positions, who stand for the future of our children. This is what we fight for, not having the right to lose.
Proud of everyone who is in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine today.
Ukraine does not give up - thanks to you. And thanks to you, I am convinced again and again - no matter how difficult it is for us, there will definitely be no shame!
Thank you for your service!
Happy Armed Forces of Ukraine Day!
