$SATL #Satellogic Awesome post from @wacbinvesting , and breathtaking response from @ericworksalot CEO of SynMax!!
Even for @ericworksalot the market is not correctly meassuring the impact of Merlin.
$SATL has an X community that is very well informed, thanks @wacbinvesting !
$SATL announced SynMax as the exclusive maritime intelligence channel for its upcoming Merlin constellation 📡🚢
Let's start with the basics for anyone new to this space.
Every large ship is supposed to broadcast its location via AIS (Automatic Identification System), basically a legally required radio beacon that says "I'm here, this is my name, this is my heading."
Think of it like a car's license plate that also announces its GPS position out loud. Problem: it's a switch.
A ship running drugs, evading sanctions, or fishing illegally in protected waters can just turn it off. It goes dark. Traditional maritime tracking, which relies almost entirely on AIS, goes blind the moment that happens.
This is exactly the gap SynMax's Theia platform is built to close. Theia doesn't just read AIS, it cross-checks AIS against actual satellite imagery and SAR (radar imagery that works through clouds and at night, when optical cameras can't see anything). If a ship turns off its beacon but a satellite still photographs it sitting exactly where it shouldn't be, Theia flags the mismatch. That's the entire product: catching ships that are actively trying not to be caught. It's already used by the U.S. government and allied defense agencies for sanctions enforcement, dark-fleet tracking, and illegal fishing detection, this isn't an unproven startup, it's an established tool getting a much better camera.
SynMax isn't a Satellogic-exclusive shop. Per a prior partnership, Theia has also run on Planet Labs' imagery for this same maritime use case, so SynMax is a multi-source platform, not a captive tool. "Exclusive" here specifically means SynMax gets sole rights to sell intelligence built on Merlin's own data, not that SynMax works only with SATL, and it mirrors the earlier SpaceKnow partnership for broader geospatial analytics.
If anything, that cuts both ways, it validates SynMax as a neutral, credible operator, but it also means Merlin's differentiation has to come from actual coverage and resolution advantages over what Theia could already do with Planet's imagery, not from being SynMax's only supplier.
(Official $PL blog post about this: https://t.co/orRHTOXEgp)
That "much better camera" part is where Merlin comes in. Today, satellite coverage of the ocean is patchy, a satellite has to be specifically pointed (tasked) at a location to photograph it, which means huge stretches of open water go unphotographed for long stretches. Merlin is designed to image the entire planet daily at roughly 1-meter resolution (sharp enough to make out individual vessels), with AIS data captured at the same time as the image, not stitched together afterward from a separate feed. For a tool built around catching ships that disappear, going from occasional snapshot to the whole ocean every day is a real jump in what's actually visible.
The release doesn't disclose any revenue terms, no data licensing fee, no revenue share. Does "exclusive channel" imply SynMax pays or shares revenue for that access? That's how channel deals normally work, but SATL hasn't confirmed it.
The real bear point isn't that SATL captures zero value, it's that we don't know how much, and the end-customer relationship (typically where pricing power lives) sits with SynMax, not SATL. That's a fair question for next earnings call.
This maritime product is targeted for 2027. Integration work between Merlin and Theia has reportedly already started behind the scenes, but paying customers won't have access to this specific capability until next year.
Strategically this is exactly the kind of move that supports the real Merlin thesis, that the value sits in data plus AI plus a distribution partner who already has government trust, not just in taking sharper pictures faster.
Long $SATL. NFA. DYOR
I see $SATL as the most asymmetrical opportunity in the market right now.
I believe the fundamentals can explain a 300% re-rating in the year ahead.
Here's the most detailed deep dive I've seen on the company, including my valuation framework and price targets.
Enjoy, and feel free to share!

Mark Cuban thinks many data centers will turn into pickleball courts
He was on the @theallinpod making the case that AI infrastructure is being overbuilt
His comparison is the 90s when everyone raced to lay fiber-optic cable
Then technology got more efficient, and what followed was the cables became useless, and companies lost billions on infrastructure nobody needed
Now he sees the same setup with AI. Companies are signing 10 and 20 year power contracts betting that compute requirements never drop, and they will
Cuban says the losers won't be retail investors this time
It'll be:
• Venture capital funds
• Private equity
• Institutional investors who went all in
