And this is before the january protests and all the executions happening this year....

A long procession through Tehran can hold more people than one venue, of course. But that is why the regime plays with language. It blends Mosalla, the streets, the procession, the surrounding areas, and people moving in and out over time, then turns all of it into one huge number. A dense camera frame becomes “the nation.” Empty spaces outside the frame disappear.

There is also fake and AI-generated material circulating as funeral footage. Some viral videos claiming to show massive crowds have already been identified as AI-generated. Citizen videos from the ground also show gaps and emptier areas that do not match the official image. This does not mean no crowd existed. It means the image being sold to the world is edited, exaggerated, and political.

And while all of this money and organization is being poured into manufacturing mourning, many in Iran still live without secure access to food, clean water, safe schools, healthcare, or basic dignity. Many children work instead of studying. Families are drowning under poverty, inflation, repression, sanctions, corruption, and grief. The regime always claims there is not enough money for people, but there is always money for banners, buses, surveillance, ceremonies, state television, foreign guests, and propaganda.

While the regime tries to make the funeral the only story coming out of Iran, please do not forget the executions.

Iran Human Rights reported at least 370 verified executions in the first six months of 2026, including 101 in June alone. That means more than three executions a day in June. Only 14% of those recorded executions were officially announced, and hundreds more reports remain unverified, so the real number may be higher. Amnesty has also warned that protesters and dissidents remain at risk of execution, including children and people who were children at the time of their alleged offences.

This is the reality behind the funeral image: the regime mourns loudly for power while killing quietly in prisons.

Most Iranians are not mourning Khamenei. We are still mourning the people killed in January, the prisoners executed after unfair trials, the women punished under forced hijab, the protesters tortured into confessions, the blinded eyes, the grieving mothers, the children killed in the streets, the families pushed into silence, the people forced into exile, and decades of fear.

For many of us, this is not just a funeral. It is another performance by the same state that made us grieve for years.

So please, I know it is complicated , but do not confuse the Islamic Republic with Iran.

When you see something online, even from your most trusted Iranian or non-Iranian influencer, fact-check it with your Iranian friends too. Ask yourself who benefits from the information and images you receive online .

And please please please
don’t stop talking about Iran.

US problem with Iran is not solved. The best case scenario is just postponed. The extremists in Iran are even more determined to obtain a nuke now more than ever.

US did not clear the way for the people to rise up. Israel started for a some days to attack the security checkpoints in major cities and that's exactly what both Israel and US should kept focusing on, but they stopped that also prematurely.
