A solar-powered yacht just successfully crossed 3,000 nautical miles without using a single drop of fuel.

Lukas Sjoman has turned the dream of perpetual, fuel-free ocean travel into reality with his self-built 11-meter yacht, the Helios 11. Cruising along Europe's scenic coastlines, Sjoman recently crossed a major milestone by logging over 3,000 nautical miles entirely on solar power.

Unlike commercial electric yachts that require frequent, expensive dock charges, this DIY vessel relies on ten standard residential rooftop solar panels feeding a 24kWh battery. The system generates up to 4,000 watts of peak sunlight energy, enough to power its 6kW electric outboard motor and even recharge the batteries to full while anchored.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is its accessibility; Sjoman constructed the entire yacht for an estimated $20,724.

By breaking down the costs—including roughly $2,881 for the battery pack, $4,600 for the electric motor, and under $900 for the solar panels—he hopes to inspire a new generation of eco-conscious boaters.

The vessel's ultra-shallow half-meter draft also allows it to navigate secluded shallow anchorages untouched by larger yachts, proving that sustainable, off-grid marine adventure is both highly practical and incredibly affordable.
