Backlog Woes: Families Struggle as US Embassy Nairobi Delays Family Reunification Visas
Mounting frustrations over prolonged visa delays at the US Embassy in Nairobi as families eagerly awaiting reunification find themselves caught in bureaucratic limbo.
The embassy's prioritization of certain visa categories has sparked an outcry, particularly among spouses and children of US citizens under the F2A, IR1, and IR2 categories, who are confronting wait times stretching years beyond expectations.
โHi Nyakundi. I hope this message finds you well. I'm reaching out to highlight a critical issue affecting many families waiting for US visas for family reunification at the US Embassy in Nairobi. Despite paying fees to the National Visa Center (NVC) for various visas (F2A - spouses of permanent residents, IR1 - spouses of US citizens, IR2 - children of US citizens, IR5 - parents of US citizens), these cases are largely ignored. Since the new ambassador's arrival, the backlog for spouse reunification ranges between 22 to 38 months after being documentarily qualified, which is incredibly frustrating and unfair.Imagine having work on your desk since 2021 and not addressing itโmost of us would be fired for such negligence. Instead of prioritizing family reunification, the embassy focuses on DV (Diversity Visa), EB3 (employment-based visas), and K1 (fiancรฉ visas), which often have their payments processed directly at the embassy. They focus on non-immigrant visas, many of which end up being denied without even a percentage of the fees refunded. Many African countries, such as Rwanda, Tanzania, and South Africa, are current in their processing. However, Nairobi hoards cases for about eight countries it serves, preventing people from transferring their cases elsewhere. Families are suffering as a result. Imagine waiting to reunite with your spouse since 2018 - this is the reality for many under the F2A category.
An online uproar might get the embassy's attention and push them to take the right, humane action. Your influence could make a significant difference in highlighting this issue and urging the embassy to prioritize family reunification visas.
Over two years (May 2022 - May 2024), the embassy issued the following numbers for immigrant visas: IR1 - 704, IR2 - 907, F2A - 180, DV - 3409, and EB3 - 3254. This clearly shows a focus on income-generating categories rather than serving all visa categories equally. They could clear the backlog within a month, as seen by their capacity to issue up to 800 visas for certain categories like DV and EB3.
Thank you for considering our plea. We appreciate your support in helping families reunite.โ
