In 2007, Abdul El-Sayed was the valedictorian at the University of Michigan, where he delivered the student commencement address alongside former President Bill Clinton.

After hearing him speak, Clinton reportedly approached El-Sayed and asked why he was going into medicine instead of politics, encouraging him to consider running for office.

Nearly 20 years later, El-Sayed is running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan.
