International is experiencing a traffic violence crisis beyond anything ever seen before
@OakDOT, @rideact, and @CaltransD4 must install significant traffic calming with physical barriers and speed cushions to keep residents, riders, and bus operators safe from speeding drivers
About last night:
I’m asking us to do a little more than we originally thought we could, so that somebody else can have what we already have.
What I know for sure, we cannot keep what is good about our neighborhood unless we share it.
Tonight Berkeley City Council approved objective design standards for North Berkeley BART which is more exciting than it might sound.
This was Council’s final vote allowing housing development to happen!
Soon 750 homes - 50% affordable- will replace parking lots at N Berk BART!
Huge thanks to @JesseArreguin@RashiKesarwani and former Councilmember Linda Maio for their leadership to bring housing to North Berkeley BART!
Thanks also to hundreds of community members who organized and spoke in support over the years of planning, especially @NBerkeleyNow.
Taking N. Berkeley @SFBART just hits different after you approve 750 homes on the parking lot - half affordable to low-income households.
There is no world in which this isn't a good thing for our community.
Remember, when it comes to the actual likelihood that a vehicle crash will occur at all, AND whether the consequences of a crash are serious, or even deadly, or not, speed is ALWAYS a factor. Including when the legal speed limits are currently too high. #SpeedKills#VisionZero
Richard “Color of Law” Rothstein is speaking Tuesday night!
Thanks to @SBerkeleyNow for letting us know, Black Rep for hosting, and Berkeley Public Library for sponsoring!
Streets must be safe for all users. W & S Berkeley’s roads must be rehabilitated after decades of disinvestment & structural racism.
No amount of entitled vitriol, of polemical condescension will change that. We fought for the Equity Zone & increased paving $ & won’t stop now.
An idea I proposed to North Berkeley design standards that Planing Commission voted on: allow ornament as an alternative to requiring notches, bump outs, & multiple materials on large buildings.
This keeps building interesting, while also saving on structural & energy costs. 🏘️
Now the ODS ought to get voted on by Berkeley City Council and design for North Berkeley BART homes can begin in earnest. Onward to paradise instead of a parking lot! More neighbors not more cars!
The ODS got better! Last night the planning commission voted to adopt #NorthBerkeleyBART Objective Design Standards that include asks from the developer team. Read their letter here --> https://t.co/ctqw9RSm92
Learn more here and start writing your (short) public comments https://t.co/VHfyM7kFal With your limited time (probably 1 min, maybe 2) make sure to focus on details of the ODS like setbacks and height because street width is not entirely in the purview of the ODS
Come to the Berkeley Planning Commission TONIGHT at 5:30 at the North Berkeley senior center and support flexible Objective Design Standards for #NorthBerkeleyBART. Pick up a blue sticker and show your support for more transit-oriented homes and more neighbors of all kinds!
We've fought for 5 years for homes at N Berk BART. We're down to the last few public mtgs.
Join TONITE's Planning Commission beginning at 5:30 for a special mtg to adopt Objective Design Standards (1901 Hearst Ave, in person only)
Some TALK about homes. We have to BE about it.
As you prepare your public comment for tonight's ODS meeting make sure to hit the following points:
🏡 #NorthBerkeleyBART's ODS needs to maximize the capacity for homes
⬆️ Increase overall height limit as well as height limit on site edges
⬇️ Reduce or remove massing breaks
