Cooperatives empower communities through collective action, shared ownership, and democratic governance, which in turn creates sustainable livelihoods by strengthening local economies and ensuring that development is both inclusive and people-centric.
Representing the spirit of #SahkarSeSamriddhi (Prosperity through Cooperation), cooperatives serve as a powerful model for equitable and participatory development.
ICSSR is currently supporting and overseeing 10 evidence-based social science research studies on strengthening cooperative institutions.
Some of @icssr's research projects on cooperatives cover Financial Inclusion & Financial Literacy in Dairy Cooperatives in Gujarat; Cooperative Competitiveness in Assam & Meghalaya; Mega Handloom Clusters and Weavers' Livelihoods in Trichy & Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu; Digitalisation of Cooperatives in Tamil Nadu; Sugar Cooperative Ownership in Maharashtra; Sustainable Dairy Farming & Value Chain Development in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar & Madhya Pradesh; Agripreneurship & Cooperative Enterprises in Karnataka; and Women’s Leadership, Gram Panchayat Governance & Cooperative Entrepreneurship in rural India.
As we mark #InternationalCooperativeDay, ICSSR reaffirms its commitment to advancing research that supports stronger institutions, sustainable livelihoods, and a more equitable and prosperous future in the true spirit of #SahkarSeSamriddhi and #ViksitBharat2047.

The Indian Council of Social Science Research organised a first-of-its-kind Research Methodology Workshop for undergraduate students today in the hybrid mode. The workshop was aimed to provide insights into the process of doing research in social and human sciences, and was attended by undergraduate students across Bharat.
Prof Dhananjay Singh, Member Secretary, ICSSR, in his introductory address, highlighted the role of NEP 2020 in integrating research in the four-year undergraduate curriculum. He introduced the participants to the interpretive frameworks in Indian knowledge traditions, and emphasised the need to decolonise research and knowledge frameworks for young scholars pursuing research in social and human sciences. In the Age of AI, he suggested that the orientation towards India’s linguistic heritage, cultural richness, multidisciplinary philosophical traditions, and recognition of indigenous knowledge can qualitatively improve research in social and human sciences in creating context-specific, meaningful societal solutions.
Prof. Manfred Max Bergman, University of Basel, Switzerland, gave a highly engaging presentation on “From Imagination to Research Proposal”. Underscoring observation as a key faculty for researchers, he encouraged students to think meaningfully about their surroundings. Framing research questions, the importance of language, and developing research proposals with defined variables and objectives were discussed in an interactive format. Professor Bergman explained to the students the shift from deficit-based questions, which focus primarily on problems or shortcomings, to possibility-based questions, which explore opportunities, strengths, and constructive outcomes.
Prof. Saswati Choudhury & Dr Bhaswati Borgohain from OKD Institute of Social Change and Development, Guwahati, jointly led the session on "Multidisciplinarity in Research," focusing on the necessity of crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries to study complex modern social issues. They provided the students with practical guidance on research ethics, preventing plagiarism, and understanding how to structure and draft formal academic project proposals for multidisciplinary enquiries.
