@oscpacey@JohnRentoul That assumes everyone has the capacity to build a reservoir. If we wanted competition we'd have to have a myriad of pipes taking our waste to our preferred sewage farm. Markets can't solve everything no matter how myopic the beholder. Bye
@FUDdaily Still not quite sure what happens to the economy when the current generation retires and still has on average £100k of debt. Does the state write off billions per year, do we deduct it from pensions, or inheritances?
@oscpacey@JohnRentoul We sold off monopolies. If 1000 people an hour want to get from London to Bristol in less than 90 minutes, then the only option is GWR. No market is practical or possible.
@JohnRentoul Markets where possible... is the correct approach, but with trains and water there all that happened was we sold off monopolies. In these cases the state is necessary. Unless there's competition for consumers there is no market.
@timfarron 32 was spot on. Each group had jeopardy in the final match so great entertainment. 48 will likely be dull. Groups of 6, 1st gets a bye and 2nd & 3rds playoff to get to last 16 would work better IMO. More games for the minnows and retains jeopardy.
@Jeremy_Hunt@adamboultonTABB Or 5# Peg triple lock to a set number of hours of minimum wage. Inflation allows for possible future drift as lived experience not the same as CPI. Linking to wages is fairer and low pay commission already exists to ensure basic needs met.
@afneil This is likely just noise. Cooper to CX seems the obvious move. Amazed she's not seen as the heir apparent after 29. Lab led coalition is about as good as it could get for Burnham. Can't see him surviving a 150+ seat loss though.
@fpl_tactician I don't think we've ever beaten a top ranked team in an overseas knockout round. Always relied on home advantage or good draws. Personally struggling to see beyond Mexico at the Azteca in the last 16, but optimistic for the home Euros in 28.
@RestIsFootball Can't think of a time in living memory when we have so many good players in so many positions being unlucky to miss out. There's always debate about 1 or 2, e.g. Gazza in 98, but never at this scale. It'll only get tougher with Dowman, Nwanieri, Rio, Miley etc al coming through.
@toryboypierce Model is terrible, but principle of funding public service broadcasting through tax is sound. IMO it should be a precept on council tax. Less admin cost and harder to dodge. World Service, local radio, etc. are important things that we shouldn't be able to opt out of paying for.
@reformparty_uk I already don't pay any tax on overtime. Mainly because I don't get paid for any overtime. Maybe start looking at outlawing unpaid overtime first?
@DanNeidle Stopping employers from leaning on staff to work unpaid overtime would win many more votes. Very common in public sector unfortunately so may turn out to be a negative for the overall tax take.
@DanNeidle@StuartMaggs My contract doesn't allow overtime, just an obligation to get the job done. I work around 45 hours a week on average. Maybe outlaw unpaid overtime first?
@LetsTalk_FPL I would have taken Hall, but when things haven't been going well he is visibly frustrated with officials. I can see why Tuchel might think he's a risk with WC refs. MGW or a.n.other sitting on the bench for a month won't be the difference between winning the WC or not.
@NM_Rdg@alexwickham IMO all local services should be funded via national taxation and redistributed via formula grant, as they mostly are now. Council tax was designed on the assumption that all properties would be revalued every 5 years and rates adjusted accordingly. That has never happened.
