Dr. Sthabile Kolwa, UNISA Astrophysics lecturer, is heading to the United States of America this coming weekend as a Fulbright Scholar at Stanford University until 31 July 2026. Dr. Kolwa is a Senior Lecturer in the Mathematical Sciences Department.

Making use of observations from state-of-the-art telescopes such as MeerKAT, she studies the life cycles of galaxies. Her research in the US will explore observational astronomy, focusing on the formation and evolution of galaxies. Specifically, she will study supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centers of galaxies, investigating whether inactive galaxies are massive enough to host active galactic nuclei—the core of her research.

The University proudly supports her and looks forward to sharing updates on her journey and discoveries upon her return.

“Pilot Alleges Racism and Irregular Fees at Progress Flight School

A commercial pilot has come forward with serious allegations of racism, financial misconduct, and retaliation at Progress Flight School, where he trained between 2019 and November 2023.

The pilot alleges that instructor Hennie Schoeman directed racist insults at him during training, at one point saying: “I can find a monkey or a baboon to fly like you on autopilot.” The pilot described this as the most devastating moment of his training, leaving him humiliated and emotionally scarred.

He further claims that Anemie English, wife of the school’s owner John English, also made racially offensive remarks. Despite these experiences, he delayed reporting the matter to the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) until after completing his training, citing legal advice and fear of further delays.

Upon completing training, the school allegedly demanded R100,000 in disputed fees. The family says the statement provided was inadequate but paid the amount to secure the issuance of the pilot’s license. Another student later alleged that Schoeman admitted the money was needed to settle Anemie English’s personal debts.

Instead of addressing the racism allegations, the school allegedly threatened legal action, accused the pilot of coaching witnesses, and shut down a student WhatsApp group after his mother raised concerns in a letter. The pilot reported the matter to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on SACAA’s advice but says the SAHRC has failed to act for more than a year despite repeated follow-ups.

The pilot also claims that more than 30 students left Progress during his training and that negative Google reviews have been removed, raising further concerns about the school’s reputation.

To date, neither Progress Flight School, SACAA, nor the SAHRC has issued a public statement in response to these allegations.”

Please pick up history books. It will shock you the amount of reinforced revision we were forced to ingest as children.

Just be open minded, be malleable - because you'll find punctured holes in the very religion, tribe and ideologies you adore.
