This is a masterclass. Elon outsmarted her here because she was attenpting to ostrasize through association of fringe and extreme undesirable opinions (far right). He countered that it’s “normal people”. He diffused, called it normal and owned it and reminded her he didn’t care what she thought. Then he attacked her (but with humour!) Siad that she’s lunatic left.

There is often a disconnect between the reality and the interpretation of that reality based on second-hand information. You see this with startups all the time. 'The customer said he wants this or that'. The team build it. The solution might be close from a requirements perspective, but it's still slightly grotesque and unappealing.

My favourite village pub came up for sale and I had a look at it from an investment perspective. Here's a Breakdown:

Spoiler: a pub is basically a passion project now.

Figures (rounded to protect investment)

Turnover: £125,000
minus Cost of Sales: £37,000
Gross Profit: £88,000 (70% margin)
minus Overheads (incl. manager salary, lease, rates, utilities, insurance, maintenance, etc.): £66,000
Net Profit (with a manager running it): £22,000

Even with just one manager (at 35k) it's almost barely making any profit despite the business having a captive market of alcoholics. After taxes, an investor might get 15k per year.

Note that buying the business comes at a price, too, so the yield would be about -3% per year, or about 3-5 years till bankruptcy unless it's a passion project.

What does it mean to be optimistic?

It's not just wishful thinking, or hoping for the best. McKenna said that optimism is about where you place your bets. Spotting the patterns and seeing the arc. A hint of gold and knowing there must be more. Having a strong hand of cards. Seeing a twinkle in someone's eyes.

There's a hint, an arc and a commitment.

Ray Mears: What's interesting is that you don't have to go to all this length to create this almond shaped axe head. Functionally, you could just break cobble and it would do a similar job. But even half a million years ago aesthetic was important. Symmetry was important - it's the beginning of art.
