I have students who will spend fifteen minutes trying to figure out how to get around doing five minutes of work.
And I don't even mean this as a complaint about laziness (but they are also lazy). I just think some of them have become so used to being able to escape boredom immediately that the prospect of actually just sitting there with the work and doing something even mildly difficult feels wrong to them.
We expend a ton of energy in education attempting to figure out how to keep students engaged. It might be better spent on teaching kids how to work even when they aren't.
@AliAmongFlowers Gaia brand is the one I use. I keep them on hand always. At the slightest hint of the start of something, bam! If you’re already full blown, it will shorten the span, too.
Are you as aware as you should be of how much censoring is going to increase the more we use AI? You should be terrified of what you'll never be allowed to know.
I had to "bully" Claude into making this graphic. Sometimes it outright refuses to answer a question, or find and link me a source, because it has decided that some things are not "appropriate." It refused to link me to know, long-published footage of 9/11 jumpers, for example.
I asked for a simple diagram with the words you see. As soon as I entered the prompt, Claude started spinning its wheels with the message "considering request for help with a sensitive stereotyped blah blah blah."
Woke is built in. And not just any woke. Hardcore woke. Look at the graphic it didn't want to make because it was allegedly derogatory toward people with narcissistic personality disorder/"pit mommies".
Contemplate that. Look at the kind of people it is programmed to protect from criticism.

@JoshDaws We should put it to work where it will serve us well without a drop in quality output. I worry that it will further create unrealistic expectations in creative work regarding turnaround time and conscientious revision and editing. I have seen AI be put to meaningful use.
Homeschooling a five-year-old has made it increasingly clear to me that moving away from memory work was an absolute disaster for education: doing memory work *increases the ability to remember stuff in general, which makes learning faster!*
“Outside fire” is a polite way of saying homeless drug addicts burned up an RV and multiple structures.
This is all of LA if defund the police Nithya is Mayor.
My biggest problem with libertarians is that they can usually rouse themselves to fight for weed and porn and everything destructive, and rarely anything good and virtuous. As a general rule, libertarians are useless-to-destructive coalition partners.
Automaticity on math facts makes problem-solving feel like moving puzzle pieces. Without it, each piece is a heavy weight. This deficit compounds like high-interest debt as topics get more advanced.
Hannah-Jones deserves mockery & scorn. She hasn’t learned anything that impacts the bullet-proof unfalsifiability of her worldview. She still despises white people & thinks progressivism is the way, the truth, & the life. Her daughter believes all this, too. Good faith not earned
You really have to love that anytime one of these guys describes a very straightforward criticism of an outcome that was long ago predicted by conservatives, they have to clarify that the position is being held by a liberal now, so that makes it OK.
Why don’t we try fixing the “skills scarcity” before importing foreign hordes?
FAFSA gives anyone with a C average and a pulse a pile of taxpayer cash to attend college for ANY MAJOR.
The dumb easy classes are full. The technical classes are empty.
Lowest hanging fruit ever
@neoavatara I don’t know how to tell you this, Pradheep, but throwing a giant neighborhood toss-the-Ganesh-in-the-retention-pond party is not “assimilating”
Karen Bass just said the quiet part out loud: don’t bother with an election, a Republican can’t win, and Becerra is already governor.
That’s not confidence — that’s a political machine so used to one-party control it no longer thinks it has to earn a single vote.
California families get the bill for that arrogance: higher costs, worse services, and politicians who treat your ballot like an inheritance.
If they won’t fight for you when they think the race is over, they were never fighting for you at all.
When there’s a delay in my Amazon shipment, I wonder to myself: ‘Hmmm…was it a fiery semi truck crash on the freeway caused by an illegal driver or a delivery truck robbery that slowed it down this time?’
