@BenWeav06231174@daveweigel the flip side: AES wins, eeks out a win over Rogers while getting dragged across the finish line by a favorable national environment, drastically underperforms Talarico, Brown, Peltola, Cooper etc., and we get two years of tedious write ups declaring leftism the one true path
@TylerDinucci Josh Barro had it right all along: the real meaning of the various Platner misdeeds was that he was a fuckup with poor executive function that would be a bad candidate or, if he got elected, a bad and unreliable senator
@jonathanchait@billscher Sean McElwee really was the originator of this strategy - the slogan bubbles up from the online left/shoddy push poll claims it’s popular among voters/filters up to Dem staff and electeds/real actual voters hate it cycle from 2019-2024
@AJentleson it seems pretty clear that two separate things led to this: (1) Platner lied to a lot of people about a lot of things, and (2) his handlers were totally high on their own supply and too convinced of their own genius to think about what was good for their candidate as a person
@BenjySarlin@NateSilver538 had this point but if the Maine Dems commit to organizing a write in campaign around a new candidate if he stays in, it also kills his leverage and at the very least turns the race into mutually assured destruction
