WHY I SPENT $2,500 REGISTERING MAPLE STORY NAMES

Been following along with @MaplestoryU open beta test this week.

This game is certainly one of the handful of top contenders that may bring a thriving web2 player base into the world of web3.

The Maple Story Universe team are building something very interesting here in web3 with the player-owned economy with a token that is entirely in the hands of the players and minted by them.

Ballsy move here by team Maple because they are essentially using web3 to disrupt their very own lucrative business model of selling cosmetic assets to players by giving the ownership and minting of those assets entirely to players in the game.

Basically the players will control the economy while the company will earn a percentage on the open market place on trades.

A good name will probably cost you $10-$50 depending on how many vowels (the most expensive) and letters in your name.

The names will be owned and tradable as NFTs. Some of the rare Maple Story names sold for tens of thousands of $ in the past, so potentially a good opportunity here to scope in early on some quality names. If the game hits critical mass in the future, those tradable names may have some real value.

I went on a name registration spree and ended up spending over $2,500 USD buying the NFTs and registering almost 70 names.

I focused on catchy user names and generic names that might be a flex, but we'll see if my name picking skill hit the mark. I could have just picked a bunch of names that I think are valuable but the actual gamers won't care about.

I probably brought my bias of generic ENS names reserving first person names like 'john' and 'paul' which may or may not be the play here. Maple story is a game and these are not necessarily ENS names here, but I still think having a rare first name will have a flex in the game, especially if there are millions of players.

How many 'John's and 'Harry's can there be in Maple story? Exactly one of each.

Yes, I'm probably not going to throw in $100 here and make $100,000 like those memecoin shillers love to boost about, but I wanted to dig around into the Maple story ecosystem and this is one way to do so.

Institutions prioritize launching chains they can fully customize. They don’t care about “settlement” on Ethereum, it is a mostly meaningless function. That’s why for the most part an L1 is more preferred to an L2.
