He moved to Canada to sell snowboards.
The store failed.
The software he built to run it became Shopify.
$180 billion. Third richest in Canada. All from a failed snowboard shop.
The story of Tobias Lutke https://t.co/thybwoA2gO
I almost shut BeSpoke down. Not in a dramatic way. Just quietly, in my head, doing math that kept landing on the same answer.
I come from finance. Numbers, models, markets. That's it. I don't know how to code. I don't have a fashion background. I had never built a consumer app before this. So when I decided to build an AI stylist, I was starting from nothing on basically every front that was supposed to matter.
No VC background either. I wasn't in the right group chats. I didn't have warm intros to investors. No friends and family round from people who already made money in tech. Every single conversation about funding, I had to explain myself from scratch. Why me. Why this. Why should anyone believe a finance guy with zero fashion or tech pedigree could build something like this.
So I bootstrapped it. That word sounds strong when you say it out loud. What it actually meant was my own savings quietly disappearing every month with no promise any of it would come back.
There was a night I sat with the numbers and it just didn't add up anymore. If I was thinking like the finance person I trained to be, the smart move was to stop. Cut the loss. Walk away. I remember just sitting there, not panicking, just tired, staring at a number that was basically telling me to quit.
I didn't quit. I honestly can't fully explain why. Walking away just felt heavier than staying in the fight.
We had zero budget for marketing. Not a small budget, zero. So whatever growth happened, happened because people tried it, felt something, and told someone else. That's it. No ads. No growth hacks. Just word of mouth, slowly turning into thousands of people, then over ten thousand.
I'm not going to pretend that was some genius strategy. A lot of it was just survival. We couldn't buy attention so we had no choice but to earn it. But somewhere in that struggle I realized something. When you can't pay for attention, you're forced to build something people actually want to talk about. That struggle became our biggest strength.
I still don't come from tech. I still don't come from fashion. I still don't have the easy investor access some founders start with. But I have over ten thousand people who found us on their own, and I know a lot more about what I'm capable of than I did a year ago.
If you're building something outside your lane, with no network, no safety net, doing it on your own savings and your own belief, I see you. It doesn't feel like a founder story while you're living it. It just feels like sitting with a hard number and deciding to take one more step anyway.
We are just getting started.

Kunal Shah studied philosophy, built FreeCharge, sold it for Rs 2,800 crore, built CRED and in June 2026 Zuckerberg called.

We just launched @Bspokeaistylist on @ProductHunt
Your closet, but smarter. Upload your clothes, get a full outfit recommendation every day, and try things on virtually before you buy anything. The more you use it, the better it gets at styling you specifically.
We've grown to 10,000+ users with zero paid marketing so far, mostly because people love sharing their virtual try-on looks. Today we're opening it up more broadly.
Would mean a lot if you checked it out and left a comment or upvote π

90 days until we find out if we are going to San Francisco.
And it just got a lot more real, because today, @Bspokeaistylist is In Review at @ycombinator Fall 2026.
I have been building since 2024, back when it was just a problem I could not stop thinking about and no proof it would become anything. I pivoted. More than once.
And BeSpoke AI Stylist is what came out of all of that. Everything before has taught me something I needed to know before I could build something people actually want.
We are building this regardless of what the outcome is. But if the answer is yes, then our next few months will be us going on the rocketship that takes BeSpoke to the world.
90 days left on the clock. Good luck to everyone applying this batch.

Two ISRO engineers walked away from stable jobs in 2018.
3,000 days later their rocket reached orbit.
India became only the 3rd country with private orbital launch capability.

The best companies in history did not find a market.
They created one.
@Google created the search market.
@Airbnb created the home-sharing market.
@Uber created the ride-sharing market.
@Bspokeaistylist is creating the personal styling market.
For everyone.

Hot take:
Raising VC funding is not an achievement.
It is a liability with a deadline.
The real achievement is building something people pay for.
Everything else is just borrowed time.

The hardest part of building is not the product.
It is the silence.
The days when nothing moves.
Nobody responds.
Nothing works.
And you have to decide whether to keep going anyway.
Every founder knows this feeling.
Most never talk about it.

Every morning 8 billion people open a wardrobe and make a decision.
Most of them get it wrong.
Not because they lack taste.
Because they lack a system.
We are building that system.
For everyone.

Everyone is talking about AI changing the world.
Very few are asking which problems it should actually solve first.
The best AI is not the most powerful.
It is the most useful.
Every single day. For every single person.

Nobody gave Zuckerberg (@finkd) permission to build Facebook.
Nobody gave Jobs permission to reinvent the phone.
Nobody gave @elonmusk permission to build rockets.
They just built.
Stop waiting for permission.
It is never coming.

Fast fashion is not a trend.
It is a trap.
Buy more. Feel worse. Repeat.
The entire industry is built on a cycle designed to never end.
We are building the exit door.

BeSpoke AI Stylist is not just a styling app.
It is the beginning of a world where AI handles every personal decision that costs you time and confidence.
Starting with what you wear.
Because how you show up every morning changes everything that follows.

You make 35,000 decisions every day.
Wasting 17 minutes of them on what to wear is not a small problem.
It is a daily tax on your confidence, energy and time.
We built BeSpoke AI Stylist to eliminate that tax.
Completely.
