There’s a massive heat wave in the biggest city in the country. The mayor is trying to avoid blackouts that could result in the heat deaths of elderly and ill people, so he’s asking people to set their thermostats to 78 degrees to alleviate stress on the electrical grid. There are many people out there taking great offense that a SOCIALIST would tell them what to do. Many are setting their thermostats LOWER in defiance, and then bragging about it on social media.
Moments like these remind me that many people’s commitment to free market and libertarian principles has nothing to do with philosophy or ideology. It’s convenient alignment to whatever will let them do what they want, whenever they want, with no burden of consequences to themselves or other people. To them, “live free or die” is simply the right to be selfish and pat yourself on the back for it.
I will repeat: “leave me alone to live how I want” is a valid principle ONLY if you’re committed to other people enjoying the same privilege, even those with whom you have nothing in common. And when you apply this maxim honestly, intelligent compromise in times of stress is inevitable. Using moments like these to double down on Zack de la Rocha slogans doesn’t make you an individualist, it makes you an asshole. VIA~~Dan Roche

You can't just abolish the Constitution via Executive Order-there's a whole process for amending the Constitution. Guess where you can find it?
