There are certain core communication concepts I find myself telling parents all the time to help them connect with their children or convey their message.
Here they are…
Technically, yes. That is chronological time. But the investment that overrides all others is Emotional Time.
Emotional time is expensive. It costs you your comfort. It requires the willingness to sit in the discomfort, to navigate the absolute mess and chaos with consciousness.
Parenting isn't mechanical. It’s an investment. And the currency isn't money—it's time.
But wait, surely you spend enough time already?
You drive them to school. You make dinner. You sit in the same room while they watch TV. Isn't that time?
The best thing you can do in today's world is practice thinking. Very few people, especially smart people, do this. Snap yourself out of your automatic patterns and stretch your mind for once. This will only become more important as AI and social media distort reality.
The best way to manage conflicts is by listening .
Active, empathetic, and responsive listening techniques are based on a recognition that all conflict is fundamentally a request for communication.
By adopting a mentorship and collaboration approach, you're not just leading by example; you're actively guiding your child towards developing essential life skills.
You're helping them build confidence, creativity, and problem-solving abilities, and you're doing it together.
Does leading by example really helps ???
Leading by example is crucial, but it's only half the recipe.
Imagine you're baking a cake with your child. You're not just handing them the recipe and saying, "Good luck!"
You're working together, side by side.
This means:
* Collaborative goal-setting:Work with your child to set achievable goals and break them down into manageable tasks. Celebrate their successes and help them learn from their failures.
* Mentorship:Share your own experiences, both successes and failures, to provide context and guidance. Help your child connect the dots between their actions and the consequences.
Controlling parenting isn't good for kids. It puts their well-being at risk.
238 studies, 38 countries, 126k ppl: Kids with controlling parents have higher rates of depression and anxiety. Kids with autonomy-supportive parents are happier.
Freedom is a foundation of well-being.
Oddly effective:
Had a coaching call with myself.
I typed up a chat conversation with some problems I was having and pretended to be my 85 year old self. Got some really insightful replies.
Worth a try.
After all, no one cares about younger you as much as older you.
Good or bad, it’s impossible to predict what the future holds.
But we don’t want our children to be caught unprepared .
