When I first seriously thought about applying abroad in 2019–20, I was hungry to bridge my higher education gap. I had completed my undergraduate degree via distance education, and during my master’s at TISS, I had a gap year and faced many mental health struggles.

Back then, I admired a few people studying abroad - they seemed untouchable, almost like idols. One such person initially inspired me because I had known him remotely for 4–5 years. But over time, I realised the reality behind the image.

When he secured a global scholarship in the UK, I saw his real picture. Coming from a feudal background, certain tendencies were expected. Personally, I looked up to him as a bigger figure. Yet, what struck me most: he was there for me, but only as a gatekeeper.

For 2 years, he stayed in touch quietly, observing, never sharing everything and his silent presence became a lesson in itself. Most of his actions and words revolved around gatekeeping opportunities.

Some people give strength not by teaching, but by letting you navigate and grow. After facing multiple gatekeeping attempts, I am fortunate that in the past few years I have achieved milestones and impacted others through my work.

A reminder: narrow-minded, feudal, shallow thinking doesn’t last. Persistence, resilience and silent learning shape your journey more than appearances ever can. Keep growing- there’s a long way to go. This is sometimes just human nature.
