@_CallumAnderson Really? There’s plenty to criticise him with- you do have an economics degree. Price controls/windfall tax/fiscal support/allowing inflation rises temporarily, all alternatives to IR control which IS a blunt instrument. Calling people silly is not the argument here.
@10DowningStreet They need decent jobs first. Will these be guaranteed freehold homes or trapped in leasehold? Will it not just mean higher profits for housebuilders and price inflation?
@afneil Fact that we have grown more than EU does not prove that we wouldn't perform better if we rejoined -OBR/LSE suggest both economies would be larger had we stayed, even if they'd grown at same rates. Also, (OECD) per capita growth since 2016 has been higher in the EU than the UK.
@zarahsultana Unfortunately as proved time and sorry time again we truly get the MPs we deserve. Just try for a little time to make a difference to the lives of your constituents, please?
@labourlewis Maybe have a little think about who got a ton-load of ueseless backbenchers just like you elected? Honestly it’s no surprise labour spent so long in opposition, I think some of you prefer it.
@TrisOsborneMP@UKLabour Please don't tweet any more, you prove yet again how shallow the pool of talent is on the labour benches. Try to concentrate on improving the lives of your constituents, this really is poor stuff.
@MerrynSW No it isn't silly- most say range 3-6% but difficult to really measure. Also useless to compare UK growth to sluggish Euro economies as our exit had a not insignificant impact on that too. Speak to SMEs who will tell you how difficult it is and impact it has had.
@DavidPintoD@griffitha@andyburnham why let labour MPs self-destruct like this? We could be approaching similar now so this may age badly. The party could do so much better without this sort of stuff - you will be wanting to improve relations with business and this won't help.
@Johnmcternan@tribunemagazine Optics are simple - Miliband failed. Failed labour leader, failure in opposition and because of those failures a big reason for Brexit. He even failed as energy secretary. Whether you think he would be a good Chancellor is irrelevant. Don't look back to wilderness years.
@RhonddaBryant Chris, problem is that most labour MPs come from the same background. There is no diversity of thought - which is why Keir could not get through difficult legislation. The country needs a leader driving the agenda, not indulge poor backbenchers (EOL bill?). Tough decisions req
@LabourRightWtch@BBCNewsnight This tweet is why labour will not now be a serious party, controlled by mediocre ngo staff and ex-councillors on the backbenches.
@BritainUnbound Point is that such campaigns are historically ineffectual. If Burnham tries it will fail quickly. The real question is why is access to products and services from our biggest trading partners so difficult whilst we are outside the trading bloc. But culture and values etc....
@BritainUnbound But we were in the EU successfully without the euro and could be again, what relevance is this? Utter nonsense. Our sovereignty really works out for us doesn’t it.
@NickCohen4 But he did not win, that's the point - because he is pretty much the most useless labour politician of the last 30 years. You could equally say he caused Brexit because he ran against his much better politican brother David thus handing the election over.
@paullewismoney@paullewismoney another older person with this nonsense - it's 9%! Young people have less disposable income from lower wage growth - and they all need heating/phones/wifi/streaming now. Journalists should know their stuff and treat younger people with respect.
@FraserNelson But what to spend it on - housing/phone contracts/streaming/wifi/energy cost - mostly not paid by Boomers. Does it factor in student loan repayments? Combine with mental health/incomplete covid educations. Any chart will not tell their story and govs still favour the elderly!
@afneil Andrew, a factor in "our biggest market" stagnating is trade friction caused by Brexit. UK companies still cannot effectively get products into Europe very easily, and vice-versa. Also, 6-8% is an outlier, general consensus is a 3-5% impact on our GDP. Still huge loss.
