Fun Fact: 🇻🇳🇻🇳A Vietnamese company told Miss Universe/Thailand🇹🇭🇹🇭 to FUCK OFF then launched an international rival competition that includes promoting Vietnamese traditional dress Áo Dài & Vietnamese designers.

The lore: Miss Universe Vietnam was originally organized by Saigon Universe Joint Stock Company (Unicorp).

From 2008 to 2022, the contest was held with the main purpose of selecting representatives to compete in Miss Universe - one of the four major international beauty pageants - so it also used the English name Miss Universe Vietnam.

From 2023, Miss Universe changed owners after JKN Global Group of Thai billionaire transgender woman Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip acquired Miss Universe Organization (MUO) from Endeavor Group Holdings-owned IMG Worldwide.

The company that successfully bid for the copyright after the change was Miss Universe Vietnam Trading Joint Stock Company. The old unit Unicorp lost & stopped cooperating with the mother contest Miss Universe, losing the right to nominate contestants to the international competition. However, Unicorp is the owner of the Vietnamese name "Miss Universe Vietnam" and would organize a separate contest with this name, completely unrelated to Miss Universe.

Unicorp also completely removed the phrase Miss Universe Vietnam (English) from its working Fanpage, only using the Vietnamese name to show respect for the new unit.

However, the new unit changed its own Facebook Fanpage to include the Vietnamese name along side the English copyright name “Miss Universe Vietnam”

JKN Global (the new Miss Universe owner) suddenly announced that they had revoked Unicorp's right to use the Vietnamese name, because this is an intellectual property of Miss Universe and decided to take back "both the lead and the net". However, this name was licensed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, independently, not under the copyright protection of the Miss Universe organization.

Simply put: both Miss Universe mother organization and the new unit does not want to be a complete "newbie" while Vietnam is already oversaturated with beauty pageants. Winning the Vietnamese brand name, the new unit does not need to rebuild from ground zero and can prove its reputation and commercial value to advertisers.

For this dispute, the Miss Universe Vietnam competition lost countless fans even though it had an air of legitimacy on international ownership. Unicorp has successfully built the brand’s image and every announcement from the new unit caused fierce controversy because of its lack of professionalism and confusion.

Unicorp continues to organize the original contest with the new English title Miss Cosmo Vietnam, separate from the Miss Universe Vietnam (English).

Following the split, the winner of Unicorp’s original contest would no longer be Miss Universe Vietnam (English) and the new Miss Universe Vietnam competition would abandon the Vietnamese name. The associated reality television series was also renamed I Am Miss Cosmo Vietnam. The contest were to search for representatives to compete in Miss Cosmo - a new international pageant founded by Unicorp (the second international pageant from Vietnam; the first is Miss Charm).

The first edition of Miss Cosmo took place in Ho Chi Minh City on September to 5 October 2024. The pageant had contestants from more than 82 countries and territories.
