Rajendra Chola I is arguably the greatest military leader India has ever produced. Here’s why -

1. He led a campaign all the way to the Ganges, defeating multiple rulers across eastern and northern India.

2. His military expeditions reached territories associated with roughly nine modern-day countries, including Srilanka, Maldives and Southeast Asia.

While many Indian kings built their reputations through conquests within the subcontinent or immediate neighbors, Rajendra combined far-reaching land campaigns with extraordinary overseas naval expeditions. Few rulers in Indian history demonstrated military reach on such a scale.

Just over a thousand years ago an Indian power did the thing we still can't. Rajendra Chola sailed a fleet across the Bay of Bengal and broke Srivijaya, the kingdom sitting on the Sumatra-Malay chokepoint that taxed everything moving between India and China. The Thanjavur inscriptions name thirteen port cities taken. The point wasn't conquest, it was the trade route. Whoever held those straits set the terms on Indian goods going east. Chola worked that out and acted on it. We have the fifth-largest navy in the world now and almost no presence shaping our own ocean, the one with our name on it. The Cholas understood that sea lanes are economic infrastructure, not just coastline to defend. Somewhere in a millennium we forgot the lesson a Tamil king wrote into stone.
