Grandala is perhaps the most brightly coloured bird of the higher Himalaya. Male is blue and female brown. Mostly seen in flocks & forages on the ground and low scrub habitat. One of the least understood of our Himalayan avifauna (PC Pratap Gurung).
Pokhara birders have teamed up for the wetland bird census in the wetlands of Pokhara Valley-globally coordinated by @WetlandsInt and in Nepal through @Nep_Orni_Uni This is a big number of birders groomed by those based in Pokhara. Thank You & Best of Luck! PC @pbs_savethebird
@hello_CAANepal

The most elusive of Nepal’s 9 vulture sps- Indian Vulture! Found in 🇮🇳 , 🇳🇵 & 🇵🇰 . Nepal and India are the only country in the world where 9 vulture species r regularly found. Most vultures are threatened because of the illicit use of NSAIDs & the power lines (PC D. Chaudhary).
Variegated Laughingthrush is the highest dwelling of our laughingthrushes in Nepal. Usually found above 3000m, its colourful plumage and bold behaviour are noticeable even to a novice birder. A fairly common breeding resident with us 😃 (PC: French Pemba Sherpa).
Third Nepal Bird Fair is going to be a great event- I will be attending 😊 pls do visit this centrally located venue and support the campaign to save 🇳🇵 birds! See you there!
Sanjan Thapa, a young wildlife biologist from Nepal, commands remarkable expertise in Nepal’s mammal diversity, especially small mammals, & specifically the bats. He consistently impresses with the depth & clarity of his knowledge. He is also one of the founders of @smcrf.
Some rhinos moved east to Gaindataar after the extension of Parsa Nanl Park. I opined rhinos know where their habitats are. Gaindatar (photo below) at Rautahat was largely unknown to us till then. Moral: improve park habitats rather than within park transportation of rhinos!
White-bellied Redstart performs an incredible journey staying up in the Himalayan valley above 3000m to breed and wintering east to NE India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Thailand. Some birds of the nominate subsps. travel all the way to the mountains of Pakistan for breeding!
I describe myself a dedicated wildlife conservationist and worshipper of nature. Prakashji is daring and a source of inspiration to follow for what he has contributed to protecting our natural heritage. Hope you enjoy watching him talk about his efforts! https://t.co/apbhe1na17
Cheer Pheasant is the only globally threatened bird of the 22 galliforms Nepal has. It is mostly found west of Kali Gandaki valley in the midhills. It is also the best studied galliform species of Nepal. Found also in Imdia & Pakistan (PC Manshanta Ghimire).
3 field ornithologists are probably most on the move bringing bird news from different quarters--diversified news on Nepal's birds. @nepal_hathan , Sanjay & Mann Shant! They are also the founders of Nepal Bird Forum, @pbs_savethebird & Manohara bird-watching site respectively!
Aerospace engineers learned efficient aircraft design from birds, yet forgot to protect their own gurus. Birds inspired humans safe flights r possible: are now being slaughtered around air stations. Let’s protect these majestic species that helped us fly (PC Hathan Chaudhary).
Bluethroat is one of the fairly common winter visitors in lowland Nepal. A male photographed in Lumbini farmlands @KeyBiodiversity#Nepal checks the surroundings for any threat before diving down to the ground. Bluethroats mainly feed on the ground -just like the rubythroats!
Nepal’s lowlands harbour large waders ranging from globally threatened to formerly threatened, thriving in human-dominated landscapes where growing populations are impacting them. Lumbini farmlands, a @KeyBiodiversity support these and more, a site needing conservation actions.
