I was explaining to my Ukrainian colleague the phrase ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch’. She told me the equivalent in Ukrainian is ‘The only free cheese is in the mousetrap’ - which is so much better
Obamacare destroyed affordable insurance and health care quality, but it made a lot of awful insurance companies obscenely wealthy. Which was the whole point.
As we celebrate the 5 year anniversary of lockdowns, one of the dumbest decisions in world history, it’s worth remembering that Sweden, basically the only country to ignore Fauci, avoid mask mandates, and follow science, had the lowest excess mortality rate in Europe
In 20 years, NIH leadership and universities have done literally nothing to address this issue.
If you just try to recreate experiments. You can only do it 10 -40% of the time.
No one stood up for reproducible science
Robert Malone is onto something. Makers of appliances could find a whole new market by NOT making their stupid shit "smart." I don't want a "smart" dishwasher. I just want a dishwasher that washes the dishes and shuts the f#ck up.
In case you needed the reminder, CMS is yet again reducing the physician conversion factor: $33.29 in 2024 to $32.35 in 2025.
It was #36.68 in 1998.
If it kept up with inflation, it would have been $68.58 in 2023.
If you're not sure what the conversion factor means for physicians, I discussed it in a previous newsletter here: https://t.co/q3g4yEAeC5
Happy 2025.
You’re covering a hospital and get called for a consult.
You’re not the primary doctor.
You open the chart to review imaging. All you need to do is look at one CT, Xray, or lab result—but the EHR won’t let you proceed without clicking through a series of unrelated alerts:
✔️ Sepsis screen (acknowledged)
✔️ Allergies (acknowledged)
✔️ Contact precautions (acknowledged)
You’re forced to “confirm” things you don’t know. You’re not at bedside. You don’t need to be at bedside.
You weren’t consulted for any of that. The primary team handles those issues.
But the system makes you lie to move forward—all to boost compliance metrics and legal cover.
The admin wins.
The lawyers win.
Doctors? We just click.
There is a interesting discussion going on in another thread about IQ and the military, and high-IQ professions where high-IQ people are sort of walled off from the rest of society
I spent 22 years in the Army, retired from active duty, then went to one of America's best law schools and then joined an elite, "white shoe" law firm.
Perhaps my observations based on my somewhat unusual combination of experiences would be enlightening.
The Army is a microcosm of American society. There are some very, very smart people, some very, very stupid people, and everything in-between.
My experience in the law was totally different--EVERYONE has a high IQ. It's a completely different world when surrounded only by very intelligent (as defined by IQ) people. In some ways it's quite intimidating, and in other ways it's very rewarding.
But here's the thing. IMO, a soldier with an average IQ has better practical knowledge and skills, a higher emotional intelligence, a better ability to deal with stress and better problem-solving skills than probably half of the high-IQ lawyers I know.
If I had to be stranded on a desert island and I had my choice of being there with 10 average IQ soldiers or ten 150+ IQ lawyers, I'd pick the soldiers every day and twice on Sundays.
One man's opinion I know, but it's an interesting topic.
One more thing--if I had to pick the 5 most intellectually demanding and intellectually rigorous moments in my entire life, all 5 happened while I was wearing an Army uniform, and none happened in the law.
Healthy parenting means allowing children to struggle. To be hurt, frustrated, and to make mistakes without being rescued. Instead of “I just want my child to be happy” we need: “I want my child to be able to cope with everything life brings.”
No one is unbiased. Everything we read, watch, or listen to is biased. And so are we. Wisdom is learning what your biases are and consuming things that bring you closer to the person you want to become.
You create you.
