It has been reported that President Christodoulides proposed the creation of a ‘truth commission’ and a bicommunal committee on youth issues. However, Mr Tatar rejected these proposals.

Yesterday evening, the UN Secretary General hosted President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar for an ‘informal meeting’ in New York. The leaders agreed to hold follow-up meetings and to explore the possibility of confidence-building measures 🇨🇾🕊️

At 18:00hrs local time on 16 August 1974, a ceasefire came into effect bringing the illegal, two-stage invasion of Cyprus by Turkey to an end. For 50 years, over a third of Cyprus has been under illegal occupation by Turkey. 50 years is too long. We want a #FreeUnitedCyprus 🇨🇾🕊️

On 16 August 1974, Turkey completed the second wave of its brutal and illegal invasion of #Cyprus. The Turkish military had advanced to occupy over 36% of the island - Turkey still occupies the same territory to this day.

Conference had briefings from the Cypriot Government and workshops focused on NEPOMAK’s mission. We also laid wreaths at Makedonitissa cemetery to honor those who sacrificed their lives defending Cyprus in 1974. The 50th anniversary of the illegal invasion was a theme throughout

Congratulations @PavlosKontides for winning the silver medal in today's Men's Dinghy event

This is Pavlos’ second silver, winning Cyprus's first ever medal at the London Olympics in 2012 for the Men's Laser Class

"As a result of our own persistent efforts to both the UN Secretary General and the EU, always in cooperation with the Greek Government, I have been invited by the UN to participate on August 13, in a meeting with the UN Secretary General in New York, with the aim of resuming talks. My response was of course positive and I hope that the same response will occur from the Turkish side and that the holding of the meeting will lead to positive results that cannot be other than the resumption of talks."

Συναντηθήκαμε με τους νέους και τις νέες μας, που ζουν στο εξωτερικό, γνωρίζουν και μαθαίνουν συνεχώς από την οικογένειά τους για την πατρίδα, για τον τόπο τους, για τις ρίζες τους.

Συνομιλήσαμε με τη νεολαία που διατηρεί ζωντανή την κυπριακή ταυτότητα ανά την υφήλιο, για τις ανάγκες και τις προσδοκίες των νέων του εξωτερικού που θέλουν να δουν την Κύπρο να προοδεύει, να προχωρά, να εξελίσσεται.

Οι νέοι και οι νέες μας, αλλά και η διατήρηση και ισχυροποίηση των δεσμών μας με τις νεότερες γενιές της κυπριακής παροικίας είναι η ίδια απόδειξη για το μέλλον που θέλουμε για τη χώρα μας. Ελάχιστο χρέος μας να φανούμε αντάξιοι των προσδοκιών τους, παραδίδοντας το αύριο που δικαιούνται και αξίζουν.
