Thoroughly impressed with @RepJames at the House of Foreign Affairs Africa Subcommittee hearing this morning.

He said and I quote

“The more I learn about this, the more I grow concerned that the Ethiopian Government is not interested in peace and is only interested in the west, the United States in particular, to solve its increasing financial woes”

He also asked pointed questions about the pattern of violence exhibited by the GoE in the past years and reemphasized his question to Mike Hammer on the state departments recognition of these crimes to which Mike Hammer responded “NO”.

It’s important that people understand the significance of this being asked and answered on record.

We had conversation directly with Rep James afterwards and I am encouraged at the subcommittee’s inquiry and genuine interest to learn more. It is clear the that the State Department was going out of their way to minimize the role of the GoE, we shouldn’t expect any less. However the inquisition by the foreign affairs committee is a clear display of the checks and balance of US democratic system and the official “recorded” statements from the members of the State Department who are key executors of Biden’s foreign policy is a win and a huge step forward in getting it right and ensuring that justice is served.

US citizens should know what and to whom their tax dollars are going.

I realize that most people saw this as another diminishing event where false narratives were being platformed in front of congressional member. But by the mere fact that the legislative branch is questioning the State Departments role and progress on establishing peace and stability in Ethiopia as opposed to shrugging it off as a non-issue should make all concerned realize that this is being recognized and publicly acknowledged.

I hope more people are able to see that this was a move in the right direction.

Abiy and his forces are responsible for the murder of more than half a million Tigrayans.
