LETTER TO PRESIDENT TRUMP ON THE RECENT ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON HE PETER OBI

Dear President @realDonaldTrump,

When an assassination attempt was made on your life, the world rightly condemned it as an attack on democracy. Notably, Peter Obi also publicly condemned that act of violence, affirming that political differences must never descend into bloodshed.

Yesterday, there was what has been described as a state-sponsored assassination attempt on Mr. Obi, widely regarded as a leading presidential candidate and the people’s choice in Nigeria. The Federal Government and the Edo State Government must provide clear answers regarding the disturbing circumstances surrounding this incident.

We respectfully call on you and members of the United States Congress to pay close attention and speak firmly against political violence directed at opposition figures under the administration of Bola Tinubu.

Nigeria’s democracy is too fragile to endure a culture of intimidation, suppression, and violence. Allegations that political actors rely on thuggery and coercion to silence opponents strike at the very heart of democratic governance. No democracy can survive where fear replaces fairness and force replaces the ballot.

We urge you, alongside the White House and distinguished members of Congress, to lend your voice in defense of democratic principles and to call for restraint, accountability, and the protection of opposition leaders in Nigeria.

Political violence anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere. Nigeria must not be allowed to descend into a system where opposition voices are silenced through fear.
