@JohnBennettBBC Agreed! Completion of my degree. WC' 98 which was also a good one then travelling later in the summer. The relief to complete studies and have it done was immense.
TELLY GOLD: It’s the anniversary of the opening day of Italia 90, so here’s the intro to the official BBC tournament round-up.
Des Lynam, in a marvellous coat, with Adamski on soundtrack.
Splendid stuff.
If ever there was a popular actor whose most famous role was diametrically opposite to his own life , surely it was Arnold Ridley. He became famous and very popular for playing Private Godfrey in the hugely popular tv series Dads Army. His character of Godfrey was elderly, doddery, kind, polite, mildly incontinent and a conscientious objector.
But Mr Ridley's life could not have been more different. Born in 1896 he tried to enlist at the outbreak of WW1 in 1914 but was turned away because of a hammer toe. But he was accepted by the Somerset Light infantry in 1915 and sent to the Western Front.
In the space of a year he saw much hand to hand fighting in the trenches He was stabbed in the groin with a bayonet and his legs were riddled with shrapnel. In 1916 at the Battle of the Somme his left hand was rendered forever almost unusable by another bayonet wound , at the same time he was smashed in the head by a German rifle butt which left a legacy of blackouts. He was then medically discharged that year.
He rejoined the army in 1939 as a 2nd Lt, his job was looking after journalists in France attached to the BEF, was evacuated on an overcrowded warship during Dunkirk operations from Boulougne. But by now his WW1 wounds were catching him up and he left the army on medical grounds in 1940.
He immediately joined the Home Guard in Caterham! He did of course go on to write The Ghost Train.
Arnold Ridley passed away in 1984. A true hero who gave so much to our country. R.I.P.
Brian Cox's fondness for the current Arsenal team may be mistaken for allegiance, but that belongs to Manchester United, a Premier League club steeped in Scottish heritage.
Cox was 11 when eight United players from Sir Matt Busby's team died in 1958 in the Munich air disaster. Two more suffered such terrible injuries that they could not play football again and 15 other passengers were killed.
"I will always be a United fan because United is what affected me as a child," Cox says, his voice softening.
"I remember it so vividly, waiting to hear about Duncan Edwards. I'll never forget those few days. That's what really locked me onto Man United, because all these young men and Edwards, who was the extraordinary player of all time… his range was amazing, he was fit as anything.
"It was his kidneys that finally killed him. Sir Matt Busby nearly died as well, he ended up in hospital. It was a very traumatic thing. As a kid… I remember feeling very empathetic towards Man United.
"It just became my team really from that point on because of what Busby then recreated. They were called the Busby Babes, they were an absolutely amazing team."

More people will genuinely care about Hearts vs Celtic than the FA Cup Final. Give me a game like this instead of two soulless entities who have done more to destroy football than anything they've ever done for it.
Hearts could become the first team other than Rangers or Celtic to win the Scottish top-flight since Aberdeen in 1985. Put that in context, nobody has won since Sir Alex Ferguson's time there before Manchester United.
Scottish football had been almost entirely controlled by the Old Firm for decades prior to Sir Alex's first title in 1980 with Aberdeen. That was the first by any other club in 15 years & nobody since they won 3 in 6 years.

🚨 DID YOU KNOW!
Manchester United went unbeaten in both their 1998–99 and 2007–08 UEFA Champions League title runs, making them the only English club to do it twice.
@SammyRArmstrong I agree with all the protocols but it's not as tough as Rugby. He wouldn't have made it to 45. Not sure if we would get to mid 30s. Super athlete as a QB, yes.
