But we make doctors work 26h shifts. Enough with the medical exceptionalism, doctors are vulnerable to the same effects of sleep deprivation as everyone else.
Medical interns will be starting their new careers this week. I think it's important for the public to know a few things about our new colleagues:
1) In teaching hospitals, we work as a team; interns ARE physicians who learn by watching, then doing, with graduated autonomy.

Most lucky days, you meet patient still alive the next day. Some bad days, you don’t. And so for a long time, maybe days or years later, the memory nags at you, you keep wondering if they died because you didn’t ask that one question or if they’d have died anyway even if you had.
Working 60-70h/week was associated with a more than 2x the risk of a medical error & almost 3x the risk of preventable adverse events & fatal preventable adverse events.
